Prospect Height’s local children clothes store is closing shop at 613 Vanderbilt Avenue, according to the signage in its windows. In sunnier economic times, New York Magazine said, “the store [was] in perfect harmony with its socially conscious Prospect Heights clientele.” Sad to see it go? GMAP

  1. considering the rents in brownstone BK, am surprised to not see more closings – particularly restaurants and these niche retail stores. cost structure is really really high in the area.

  2. I’m not sure why the deal fell through, but the reason the store is closing is because the owners left and couldn’t find a buyer…I think it did pretty good business considering it had two locations, this one and the one in Park Slope.

It’s a great little shop, and it saved me plenty o’ times when I had to pick up a gift in a hurry. I will definitely miss it.

  3. “Owners live in Australia and decided that it was becoming too difficult to run the business from there.”

Utter crap. Successful businesses don’t close shop just like that. Even so, why did the takeover offer fall through?

You’re telling me we had this many business closures in the years right before 2006 or 2008?

    Small business is getting crushed!

  4. generally speaking, it was a bit expensive for the area, but i will miss it. cute stuff for gifts and special occasions, and i liked having an option that was a bit more local (and less annoying) than area kids or lulu’s.

my understanding is that the owner moved back to australia. i thought that two young women who worked there were going to take it over and consolidate the two storefronts (this one and the one on 5th ave) but i guess that didn’t happen. i’m no business maven, but when it comes to baby stuff, the boutique model just doesn’t seem to work unless you can count on lots of grandmas and baby showers nearby. seems like you need to have either the capital and space for a lot of diverse stock for multiple purposes and age ranges (and, perhaps, vendor discounts), or also be offering services like haircuts or mommy & me classes, etc.
