“Despite the lingering hippie connotations, collectives, which might be described as self-managed groups of people with similar interests working toward a common goal, are a thoroughly modern phenomenon. And nowhere in New York is this collective mind-set as embraced as it is in Bushwick. The persistently cheap rents, surplus industrial space and neo-bohemian vibe have drawn artists and creative entrepreneurs priced out of the Lower East Side and Williamsburg for over a decade, and many are now experimenting with collective lifestyles as never before.” — NY Times, 9/17/10

I’m sure we all spend money on stupid stuff we don’t need.

maybe they wouldn’t have to live 10 to an apartment if they didnt do a “ton of drugs”.

most of the artists, musicians, performers i knew in bushwick did not have anything to steal… and definitely never had any money to spend at the apple store.

“I hope they are armed’.
you sir are a complete IDIOT. Why don’t you get out more? It might help you not be an…idiot.
most of the artists, musicians, performers i knew in bushwick did not have anything to steal… and definitely never had any money to spend at the apple store.
As the article says, they live 10 to an 800 square loft with interior rooms without windows, they scrounge for clothes, food, money and cigarettes and they create some amazing art, music and put out some of the best parties I’ve ever been to.
What’s inspiring to me is that they keep doing it past their early 20s and are adults working on projects that they believe in. Along the way they have sacrificed the security of a steady job, a paycheck, regular food, pretty much the life we lead for their work. They are not romantic as most of them smell pretty bad, smoke a ton of cigarettes, do a ton of drugs and lead very unhealthy lifestyles. But it is cool.
they dont need to be heavily armed. they are targeted for all the expensive items that they always seem to have on their person at any given time, and thieves know that and prey upon it. plus the fact they just hand over their stuff without putting up any kind of fight. it just means another trip back to the apple store.

I hope they are heavily armed.
obviously not all of them, but it does seem like most art these days is heavily coming out of bushwick, so that’s cool

the only collective thing these people do is pitch money in for the coke dealer.
