Closing Bell: Your Brooklyn Blocks
The L Magazine released a 50 Best Blocks in Brooklyn article today and man, does it cover everything. Best block for ugly condos? (4th Avenue between 4th and 5th.) For Righting History’s Wrongs? (Malcolm X between Monroe and Madison.) How about for people watching? (Fulton and Lafayette.) The last five blocks listed are those best…

(Fulton and Lafayette.) The last five blocks listed are those best to live on: Verandah Place in Cobble Hill, Oak Street in Greenpoint, Columbia Heights in Brooklyn Heights, Argyle Road in Ditmas Park, and finally Fillmore Place in Williamsburg. What say you? Have they missed any categories?
The 50 Best Blocks in Brooklyn [The L]
Verandah Place by fake is the new real
“Carroll between 8th and PPW is my favorite residential block in PS”
I agree with that. I haven’t been on every block in Park Slope, but that would be hard to beat. It’s like a different world.
Before anybody gets too starry-eyed about living next to park filled with people sipping lattes from Ted and Honey, let me describe the platoon of rats that come out at night to feast on left overs or the drunken teenagers making out on the park benches. Yes, I live on Verandah Place. Love it. Mostly. But the idealization? Not so much.
Regarding 3rd Street in the Slope, I actually prefer the block between 5th and 6th Avenues. Extra wide sidewalks and deeper gardens. And closer to the Gate. 🙂
Greenpoint is lovely, but I am blown away by Clinton Hill. Clinton or Washington should be on that list. Come on — is there anyone here who wouldn’t want to live in one of those mansions? Or even part of one of those mansions?
Biggest loser in Brooklyn = anyone who takes L Magazine’s opinion seriously.
And #42, you know the cemetery is da’ bomb.
More like Leonard Bernstein than Morrison…
While Greenpoint has its issues it is
1) about 11 mins by Taxi (after 9pm) from midtown where I work (you have to take the midtown tunnel)
2) taxis don’t refuse to go there
3) cheap
4) low-rise (historic district anyway)
5) has access to all the young vibrancy and nightlife of Williamsburg and Bushwick without actually being in either
6) low crime
7) has real shops on the main street, not just chains
6) has funky parts (and a funky smell sometimes)
9) you can actually park you car
10) plenty of old stuff for us stuck in the past to admire
I’ve lived in Manhattan and other nabes in Brooklyn and Queens. Its my favorite place to live so far, but I am getting on a bit nowadays.
I agree there are lovely homes on 3rd Street but the street is just too wide and heavily trafficked.
I think Carroll between 8th and PPW is my favorite residential block in PS / Brooklyn. Almost said ‘brownstone’ block, but I like it because it has a great variety, not just brownstones.
There are lots of runners-up, however!
