Many upcoming events focused on the Gowanus Canal have hit our inbox. The 2012 Gowanus Open Studios takes place Oct. 13 and 14 and will feature more than 150 artists in the area. Gowanus by Design is holding a design and planning contest to remake the contaminated site. The Gowanus Girls Indie Design and Food Market takes place noon to sunset in the Gowanus Grove Oct. 13 and 27. The Gowanus Canal Conservancy is putting on two lectures about urban ecology at Build It Green’s Gowanus location Oct. 17 and Nov. 14. At the first, Heather Liljengren, Supervising Seed Collector and Chief Field Taxonomist, Greenbelt Native Plant Center, NYC Department of Parks & Recreation, will speak on unique native plant communities at the Gowanus Canal and beyond, with a special emphasis on plants suitable for urban shoreline restoration projects in New York City. The second lecture, titled “Restoration and Management of Woodlands in Prospect Park,” features John Jordan, Natural Resources Supervisor at Prospect Park. He will give an overview of restoration efforts in the Prospect Park woodlands.
