The blog Kottke.org picked up an interesting find from Strange Maps. The blog published a map from 1916 which suggested the vast potential of expanding New York into the adjacent waters and connecting it with Brooklyn. The theorist, consulting engineer and city planner Dr T. Kennard Thomson, said, “I propose to add, by a series of engineering projects, fifty square miles to Greater New York’s area and port foothold. At the same time this will mean an addition of one hundred miles of new water-front. New York’s City Hall would become the center of a really greater New York, having a radius of twenty-five miles, and within that circle there would be ample room for a population of twenty-five millions, the entire project to be carried out within a few years. Many have said ‘It can’t be done.’ The majority of engineers, however, have acknowledged the possibility, and I have received hundreds of letters of encouragement.” Strange maps (and possibilities), indeed!
I’m sure the whole project is technically possible and not as complicated as many things going on elsewhere in the world.
However, until NYC becomes an autocracy, there will not be the necessary consensus to get this done. I’m sure someone will sue over ruining the view of the Silvercup sign.
East New York as uber-desirable riverfront property. Love it.
Other than that, no thanks.
i have no clue what i just read.
*rob*
If this idea were proposed today, Mr. B.’s servers would once again suffer a nervous breakdown. NIMBY overload.
Could be a good idea. Isn’t it like what was done in Dubai, with the palm Islands.
But at this point in time, who gives a rats ass anyway. Like we really have the money to do this…..oh wait, maybe the thirteen dollar bridge toll could be of some help….. LOL
I think is good idea.
would make it easier to get a cab to Brooklyn.
ah yeas, the days if thinking big, no matter how improbable.
