The sound of more than 50,000 pairs of feet pounding the pavement could be heard in Brooklyn Sunday as the 47th New York City Marathon raced through the borough. On a route that included 12 miles stretching through from Bay Ridge to Greenpoint, Brooklynites rolled out a rowdy welcome for runners from all over the world.

Live bands offered music to rev up the runners, bystanders flashed encouraging signs and onlookers rattled noisemakers from cowbells to old fashioned pots and pans to give runners a boost. The misty morning turned into a steadier light rain as the morning progressed but it didn’t dampen the mood of those out to cheer on the athletes from curbs, stoops and rooftops.

Photographers were busy snapping photos that ranged from inspirational to humorous and, after looking through scores of them, here are our Instagram picks from along the Brooklyn route.
