Lettuce Sandwich, Anyone?
We’ve been meaning to get over to Saltie in Williamsburg, where unusual sandwiches are getting rave reviews. But could the Romaine Dinghy, a sandwich made mostly of lettuce, be as good as Grub Street says it is? “The bread is fairly oozing with gobs of good mayo. The romaine is crisp and dressed to order with extra-virgin olive oil, lemon, and anchovy, and then piled high as if it were a portion of Katz’s pastrami. Some radish slivers and chives give it a little bite. In short, it’s a BLT without the B or the T, but damn if the dinghy thingy didn’t win us over.” Photo by Grub Street.

This Week’s Openings
Cafe Collete is now open in the old Silent H space in Williamsburg, says EaterBombay Garden is now open in Greenpoint, and New York Shitty has photos of the food and the rather amazing plaques used in the decor… Gyro King is opening “right next to the Chase bank on Newkirk Plaza,” says Ditmas Park Blog… And Williamsburg’s Brooklyn Star, which was severely damaged by a fire, is on the road to reopening, Eater reports.

Ted & Honey Preps for Liquor License
We mentioned last week that the folks at Ted & Honey were thinking about applying for a liquor license. Now, the owners are telling Grub Street that they’ll have their liquor license by July and will be serving “Sixpoint and beer flights, white sangria, [and] beer cocktails.”

After the jump: Will Shake Shack come to Brooklyn? Plus, the early word on Seersucker, Saturday brunch at Buttermilk Channel, crepes in Dumbo, and a musical supermarket…

Will Shake Shack Open in Atlantic Gardens?
According to Eater, “A tipster claims that they overheard the management at Atlantic Gardens, a new business development in Boerum Hill, talking about a new Shack location moving in.” Eater contacted Atlantic Gardens, Shake Shack, and the Union Square Hospitality Group, but couldn’t confirm the rumor. Could be just wishful thinking — but if you wish for it, it may come.

Seersucker: The Early Word
Chowhound Crabby McCree pays a visit to Seersucker, the new Southern spot on Smith Street, and writes: “We started with the southern snack tray, an unpretentious collection of homemade chips, pimento cheese, deviled eggs, carrots, celery, ham pate and finally, ultimately, house pickled okra. Pickled okra. The first place in the city I’ve run into that serves this little southern delicacy and it is nigh-perfect… Seersucker is just where I want it, today and in my neighborhood.”

Quick Bites
Buttermilk Channel, which was previously serving brunch only on Sundays, will now serve their morning menu on Saturdays, too, says Eater… The Jacques Torres ice cream parlor in Dumbo is now serving crepes, says Grub Street… And, finally, New York Press reports: “Starting next week, Clinton Hill’s  Fresh Fanatic will launch an outdoor space where local bands can play while the bo-bo shoppers can drink a smoothie or pick at something from the salad bar.” It’ll be interesting to see what kind of bands are looking to pick up gigs in a supermarket…

  1. my kid keeps asking when brooklyn star is reopening and someone who also lives in WB asked me today at a meeting even. i am so glad. it was on the brunch rotation and is very sorely missed.
dirty – i haven’t tried Saitie either but mostly cause i eat a lot of sandwiches anyway and want something else usually. the lettuce thing really doesn’t sound that bad to me actually.
i think the cost has to cover the high overhead that any operation has.

  2. Seersucker was disappointing. Nice place, nice service, mediocre food. The Shrimp & Grits were bland & Mushy and the Pig’s Foot was gross. Loved the steak though, and am willing to give it another shot. Any word on whether they’ll ever get a liquor license?
