It’s hard to imagine Brooklyn without its namesake bridge, but 134 years ago the Brooklyn Bridge was a sparkling new engineering wonder. Opened to the public on May 24, 1883 — after 14 years of construction — the bridge united Brooklyn and Manhattan and quickly became an iconic part of the waterfront skyline.

Brooklyn Bridge is now a must-see for tourists, a heavily used pedestrian pathway and, of course, one of the most photographed symbols of the borough.

In celebration of the anniversary, we’ve looked through our @brownstoner Instagram feed for the 10 most popular Brooklyn Bridge images we’ve ever posted.
