Countertops are in!
They have been mostly under wraps as the work continues around the kitchen but I had to pull back the brown paper and take a peak.
Here is a section of the soapstone in its "virginal" unoiled state.

Its really such a beautiful stone. I like to touch it. Yes, Im a stone pervert.

Lovely stone - which variety is it? I'm another soapstone fan and have spent an indecent amount of time fondling my soapstone samples.
Your reno is proceeding beautifully!

do you know how much it is a sq ft? Was it more or less than alternatives such as granite, marble, ...

Its more expensive than basic grades of granite and marble but about on par with exotic granites/marbles.
Since we didn't need very much but we needed a specific size for the island, it ended up being cheaper to buy it cut for a per foot price rather than a slab price. I believe the per foot cost was $45/foot. If we had needed a different configuration and bought the slab, it would have cost $35/foot (but you have to buy the entire slab).
So the total cost for our stone plus the cost of the cutting (not the finishing, just the cut to size) was $1600. This cost does not include the installation or the finishing. Our contractor did that as part of the overall cost.

From where did you buy the soapstone?
Posted by: guest at February 11, 2008 1:38 PM
We bought it from M. Teixeira Soapstone (www.soapstones.com)

Could you please let me know who you used as a contractor for your basement project? It looks great!
