The kitchen continued...
As a follow up to my earlier kitchen post, the cabinets are now on order. Woo-hoo!
We had to wait this long because we weren't certain just how well we could move the plumbing to accommodate the extra foot we're squeezing into the room. Now that the wall is framed out, we were able to confirm our measurements and put the order in.
We picked this inset door style in a creamy off white called buttercream.

Knobs will be glass with a black trim

Countertops are still under discussion. I still love the soapstone and am not bothered by how it will look after it has scratches in it. Mr. Limestone is not quite as willing to accept a more lived in look so we may end up settling with honed black granite. But now that Im looking into that material, Im reading horror stories. So thats still up in the air but there is plenty of time for that decision.

Super nice cabinets. Are they expensive? BTW, I love soapstone.

For your counter: I used a quartz top made by Caesarstone called "Lagos Blue." It's look is similar to concrete (even when not honed), but the counter is as durable as granite and won't stain.

Thanks dt. The cabinets are by Plain and Fancy Cabinets. They are pricey because of the extra workmanship required for the inset style but frankly, I have yet to encounter something that wasn't when it comes to home renovation. I think EVERYTHING is expensive.
Thanks for the suggestion guest but I really don't like the look of synthetic countertops. They may be more durable but their not my style.

we are having the same countertop debate. i look forward to seeing what you choose and how you like it.

Mrs Limestone,
where did you decide to buy the cabinets? (They look nice)
Posted by: guest at October 8, 2007 4:43 PM
lovely cabinets. okay, i hear you about the synthetic, and i love soapstone, too. but ... check out the new collection from corian - called the "private collection". it's absolutely beautiful.
i'm partial to "Clam Shell" which is described as "A bisque base, with soft nickel and antique brass veins and traces of "barely there" mix of translucent particles that create a soft and entirely natural effect."
as for black granite with those lovely buttercream cabinets ... ugh!

7:11: I'll check out the private collection, thanks. As for your judgement on how well black and cream go together, you are entitled to your opinion but Im quite comfortable with my choice.
4:43: We ordered from Park Slope Kitchen Gallery. Haven't received anything yet so I'll hold off on a thumbs up/down from them. The woman we dealt with was very patient and easy to work with so we've had a good experience thus far. I know too well that the real proof is when you get the cabinets and the inevitable problems afterward. I'll let you know how it goes.

Have you looked at Pietra Cardosa? It's a lovely grey stone with very pretty veining that's much harder than limestone and soapstone but not as antiseptic as granite, also a little less expensive. We've had ours for 7 years with no regrets. It has darkened some but nothing really stains it (although it will absorb oil if you don't wipe it up). I love your knobs. make sure you get real crystal not just glass. The glass knobs have less clarity and brightness and also have a less authentically period look to them.

Love the look of Peitra but based on my very informal survey of stone people it seems to have the problems of both soapstone and marble combined. Hearing you say that youve had it for 7 years makes me hopeful but I don't think I can convince mr. limestone of it. Any suggestions?
Thanks for the heads up on the crystal. I just assumed real crystal would be too expensive to be mass manufactered as knobs. I don't want to use old ones b/c old crystals have lead in them and I dont want my paws on them everyday. Do you have a source for new?

We faced the same countertop choice and ended up going with a honed acid-wash black granite. We love it. In fact, it looks a lot like the soapstone we were hoping to get, but it has all of the advantages of granite (durability, impervious to staining, etc.). We had not been interested in granite because of its shiny nature, but the honed acid-wash gives it a soft organic feeling. I highly recommend it.
