Islanders Move to Brooklyn Could Happen

When speculation first arose about the possibility of the Islanders moving to the Barclays Center, there was some question over whether the arena could actually accommodate ice hockey. In a statement yesterday, Barclays Center CEO Brett Yormark removed that potential barrier: “The Barclays Center will have an ice rink that can support professional hockey,” he told The Daily News.

Could the Islanders End Up in Brooklyn?

By now, you’ve probably heard that voters in Nassau County said no to spending $400 million on renovating the Coliseum. That’s left the future of its anchor tenant, the New York Islanders, up in the air. The team’s owner, Charles Wang, has said that the team would honor its lease that goes through 2015. At that point, everything’s up for grabs including, says CBS Sports, moving west to join the Nets at the Barclays Center. “Aside from a passing vote or another county on Long Island stepping up to build an arena, this would be the next best solution,” says the CBS writer. What do you think of that idea?

Slope Armory Set-Back

park-slope-armory-1109.jpgThe ribbon-cutting at the Park Slope Armory’s refurbished athletic facilities held more than a year and a half ago is looking rather premature in hindsight. The Brooklyn Paper says that the Park Slope Armory opening has been delayed again, something to do with both the glacial pace of classroom as well as the inability to get the FDNY to set a date to inspect. They can’t even give us a ballpark figure, said Nica Lalli, CB6′s Parks Committee chairwoman. They can not give us anything that will satisfy our need to know. We asked it 15 ways, but they did not budge and give us a date. Once the fire department does sigs off, the Department of Homeless Services can hand over control to the YMCA; at that point the Y will have another couple of months of its own work to do, though some of the recreation programs for kids will not have to wait.

StreetLevel: Gowanus Will Pump You Up!

triomph-08-2009.JPG
Come early September, the raw space pictured above will be transformed into a gym and training center called Triomph Fitness, Health, & Wellness. The gym, in a former warehouse at 540 President Street, will have cardio equipment, a studio space for classes, a juice bar, a strength training area and massage rooms. Triomph is being established by three people who used to work at the Cobble Hill Fitness Collective and, as is the case with Fitness Collective, the emphasis here will be on one-on-one training. (In other words, the facility won’t be open for a la carte use of machines.) Training packages are being discounted in advance of the September 9th grand opening.
