Th Unfinishable Floor-Finished----well, almost...............
We have finished the top floor--well mostly finished. It was a beeline to the finish line this last week or so, fighting through the last of the 4th floor's defenses. We have been calling it the unfinishable floor for the last month or so as it has been almost there--well, from the beginning. It was the floor that was in the best shape to begin with when we bought the place...or so we thought. We pulled up the carpet and the millions of staples and cleaned and vaccumed and cleaned and vaccumed and pulled out more staples. We did the demo ourselves (good stress reliever). We scraped the vinyl tiles off the floor (I've already discussed that in a previous post). After tearing things out, we didn't know what else to do (we lived in a co-op previously). Our knight in shining armor arrived. We (with contractor--previously described as knight in shining armor) attacked the kitchen--things were much harder than they seemed (see my last post for the before and during pics, but not the finished pic). Our contractor disappeared and said he would return. Weeks went by but...it...was...going to...be...ok. Because there wasn't much to do. Our contractor showed up--there were plumbing problems and electrical problems. It's going to be okay, said our knight. There was hope. Then he was gone and there was no hope. We were paralyzed. We were stressed. There was a 1000 pounds of concrete to cart off. Our contractor showed up--we were psyched. We discovered a great brick wall behind the concrete, so cleaned and sealed that. The floors were tiled--it was starting to look like an apt. But our contractor took off and this time he never came back (there was more to it than that). We lost a friend. We were paralyzed again. There were tears and dispair. There was anger.
We hoped to try and do more things ourselves--didn't get much done. More dispair, more anger. More money. Still no rent coming in, though the mortgage still had to go out. We emailed everyone we knew that had ever had anything done by someone else involving a hammer. A dude showed up. He was nice. There was hope. He said he could finish the floor in 4 days. We were psyched. He was wrong. Not even close. He said he worked many hours and we owed him much money, though we couldn't really see the evidence of work completed and money owed. We paid him. We were angry. We hopped to it again--we missed work--we missed meals--we missed sleep. We bought books. We grouted. We sanded. We painted. We went to Ikea and then put together the stuff we bought. We got as far as we could go ourselves. We scoured the Brownstoner--found a guy: he said he could finish the floor in 3 days. There was hope. He worked hard. He got things done. He was taken away in cuffs by two detectives (nothing to do with us). It was sad. We started working hard again. We were scared about the money and our prospects for finishing and actually keeping the house. We found another guy. He talked a lot but couldn't do a lot. We were a bit smarted by this point and fired him right away. We hopped to it--scoured the Brownstoner once again. I could go on for pages.........but it is just more of the same. We finally showed the apartment--we made disclaimers: "this isn't quite done but will look like...; "there's going to be a door here and a shelf over there"; "we plan to install the sink over the weekend." Our tenants literally moved in WHILE we were still painting, sanding, scraping.
Here are the pics:
The kitchen is our masterpiece.
There is a breakfast bar against the other wall---and hard to photograph-there will be butcher block on that last cabinet. we actually also added a vent for the stove and another cabinet at the end but the tenants moved in before I could photograph!!!

Bathroom--We replaced the vanity, the toilet, plied the vinyl and scrubed and scrubed and scrubed.
We also put in the tub to shower convertor--seems like everyone who ever lived in this house were bath lovers.
We are finally finished--well sort of--we hope to be completely done this weekend.....one down....two more to go.

You should be proud of all this work you did -- and did yourselves. Congratulations -- hope you're getting a good rent, after all this...-Debra on Prospect Pl.

Nice work guys. I can totally relate to all the frustration and anger and despair that is related to this kind of work. Cool that you pulled through and got the floor done. We need to do the same thing pretty soon.

The tub faucet must be above the top of the tub, to prevent an overflowing tub mixing with the water supply, see building code.

Actually that's true about the tub faucet. Easy to find an inexpensive gooseneck that will swivel out of the way so you don't bang your knee. But I wouldn't worry about it too much unless you invite a building inspector over.

M & T--- VERY nice work tastefully done. I wouldn't mind renting one of those apartments. You will be more than pleased when the entire resoration is complete. Can't wait to come and visit and maybe stay for awhile. . . Keep up the good work. Guess who from Reno, NV?
