Thanksgiving Edition

kitch-16.jpg

Making great progress on the first floor. The floors are entirely in, only to get covered with masonite to protect painting and further work.

Still waiting for the upstairs glass shower doors from Brian at Brooklyn Kitchens and Baths. Twelve weeks and counting.

We made it very clear to the GC that we wanted at least a stove and hood in by Thanksgiving, so we could use the dining room and the multiple ovens. We made sure that the appliances were here when needed (btw we bought all the appliances from Appliance Showroom, behind Costco’s. They met Drimmer’s prices and were a pleasure to deal with).

Here we are just finishing the taping in the DR.

We’re doing the priming and painting, so there she is, doing it up.

Here’s the DR, mostly painted (BM Linen White) with the speakers installed.

We didn’t expect to have plumbing in by Thanksgiving, as plumbing inspection was Monday. Indeed, we didn’t. We didn’t think we’d have cabinets either, as they were coming from Brooklyn Kitchen as well. Given the source, we were hoping for Thanksgiving 2009. However, to our surprise, they showed up Monday and were installed Tuesday by our GC. Of course, you may be wondering where the doors are. So are we. Supposedly they had QC problems so Brooklyn Kitchens says we should have Monday or Tuesday. We’ll see.

There’s a whole sequence of photos in the main gallery showing the crew chief inspecting the kitchen cabinets. Here’s one of the better ones.

Here’s how the kitchen was on Thanksgiving (those are a couple of trim pieces posing as counters).

The eagle-eyed will see the turkey in the bottom of the unplugged wine cooler, where it was placed to warm up while also being safe from the dog and cat.

We heard some people complain about these Wolf stoves. Here’s one who actually likes it!

Nice. It's really coming along. Our GC's men found that the best way to handle our crew chiefs was to let them out inadvertently so they could chase birds and squirrels all day. I've demoted the chiefs to mouse patrol, at which they excel to the point of obsolescence.

i like your sink. question - why did you lay the wood floors the 'short' way verses the 'long' way? does it make the room look wider vs. longer? our floors are laid the long way.

Thanks SF. Our crew chief is on permanent waterbug patrol, and he's doing a great job. Foe some reason the wife thinks mice are cute, but HATES waterbugs! I love the way he picks them up and then CRUNCH.

bkny, the GC felt he could save some money by laying the new floor on top of the old subfloor, rather than putting down additional 3/4" plywood. Therefore the floor has to go in the short way, which in the case of this relatively narrow house, seems better anyway.

Denton,

Coming along nicely. Congrats. couple of questions for you. Did you go for the wolf because of the look or performance ? Looks amazing. The wife has her heart set on such designs but cost will likely determine that one.

Also - Were the kitchen cabinets custom made or semi custom ? If the former, what made you go in this direction rather than the cheaper alternative ?

Thanks

Hey 10th Street:

We looked at other stoves besides the Wolf like DCC, Thermador, etc. But the Wolf was hardly more expensive than the others, so we figured we'd stick with the tried and true.

Unlike the refrig, were Sub-Zero is way more expensive than some other brands, like the Liebherr we ended up with.

We look for value over everything.

Honestly, I don't know that much about custom vs. semi-custom. I assume the latter. It was 6k for all of them. THey're made by a company called Hasseim or similar.

I missed this update along the way. Looks wonderful could you tell me about the fridge? This is the first I've heard of them but i am just starting to think about replacing an older one. Thank you

lauriec, we like this one. It's very efficient (off the Energy Star chart). I guess you could see one in person at your favorite showroom.
