Brooklyn Kindergarten Society

BKS works to ensure that children receive a high-quality early childhood education that gives them the skills to succeed in kindergarten and beyond.

About

Brooklyn Kindergarten Society (BKS) has dedicated itself to providing high quality early childhood education to children from low-income families for the last 125 years. Our five, soon to be six, early childhood learning centers are located in public housing in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Crown Heights, and Brownsville.

We serve nearly 400 children in full-day educational classes, each enriched with pre-literacy and language programs as well as arts and music instruction. Our newest center at Weeksville Gardens in North Crown Heights will have a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) classroom that will be an innovative indoor learning space for BKS children.

BKS recognizes that families – the key to children’s success – often benefit from resources and support beyond the classroom. To that end, our social services staff provides counseling, referral services, and workshops for children and their families.

In 2015, BKS piloted the Family Child Care Partnership (FCCP). In this new and innovative program, BKS is seeking to provide more vulnerable Brooklyn children, from birth to age five, with access to high quality early childhood experiences that prepare them for success in school and life.

Through FCCP, family child care providers are supported by BKS staff at their locations through coaching, modeling, and professional development. This is helping to improve child care provider-child interactions and enhance the foundation for young children’s learning and development outside of BKS classrooms. The FCCP pilot program is unique in its role in becoming a community partner with child care providers and sharing best practices beyond our centers.
