why noroof?
When we received national recognition for the Slot House, the collaboration needed a name. A part of the decision to call ourselves noroof architects is that the alliance began with support from teaching and practicing under other roofs. We also enjoy the suggestion of openness, as “opening the work” is an invitation for others – inhabitants and passerbys – to participate in its making by adding their own experiences to the architecture. We do this through creating visible relations that connect everyday matter and circumstances to entities outside of themselves, thereby re-collecting the beauty of ordinary things.
And of course we remember that hope was all that remained inside when the lid came off of Pandora’s box.
how we work
noroof is also a way of working. In the studio, beginnings are rarely made with an empty desk; there is always a pile of scraps from other roofs within reach. Architecture develops through picking up these pieces and rearranging them in a way that could not be done in their previous incarnation. These other roofs are drawn from the memories of our clients, our sites, and our predecessors (for example, the “Breuer” window in the Pushmi-Pullyu House). By freeing ourselves from the notion that each project must be contained under it’s own roof, we are able to sprout ideas, make connections, and create in such a way that our work may benefit from the 30+ years of experience that we have built practicing architecture.
