Hachi Asian Bistro

"A former Williamsburg pet shop has now rolled over to become this pan-Asian restaurant featuring Chinese, Japanese and Malaysian plates," says Metromix. "The space has Buddha statues, Asian prints on distressed cement walls, and two chandeliers built from dark-colored glass bottles. One owner is Eric Ong, of Nana in Park Slope, and specialty rolls like the bullet — shrimp tempura with avocado and spicy garlic-chile sauce — share space on the menu with a mix of curry, noodle, and sauté dishes," writes Alexandra Vallis for New York magazine.
And billburg adds, "The 70 seat restaurant features an array of Asian cuisine. Dishes range from the traditional Wok Lo Mein to the curious Angry Pizza, a crispy pan-fried roti topped with spicy tuna or salmon and garnished with shredded seaweed, bonito flakes and a wasabi cream sauce." We went to Hachi for dinner four or five times. Let me start by saying that it is one the most beautiful restaurants in Williamsburg! I love the decoration so much, from the ceiling to the bathrooms (make sure you find a good excuse to go and see the bathrooms)! Amazing! They have a little patio surrounded with bamboo plants, which is adds to the exotic scenery quite nicely! The staff is very friendly and the service rather fast. It is the new chic place on Grand street.
Now let's talk about the food. The problem with pan-Asian restaurants is that they don't excel at any type of cuisine. Sure you can choose from a wide selection of dishes ranging from sushi to Malaysian fried mei fun. But I don't think they can make as good sushi as an only Japanese restaurant or as good Thai as an only Thai restaurant. So the food at Hachi is good but not fantastic. For instance I tried their papaya boat shrimp salad which has nothing to do with the typical papaya salad you can find in a Thai restaurant. I also tried their curry dishes which were ok. I was pretty happy with their specialty rolls from their Japanese menu. All dishes are very nicely presented.
One upside is the pricing: it is rather cheap for such a beautiful place. That's mainly the reason why we went back several times. But if I want an exquisite curry dish I would go to Lily Thai which is one block away.

This is a top quality but extremely reasonable restaurant!! Go and check it out yourself. You will NOT be disappointed. The food, service, decor and ambience is amazing. Cool music and well stocked bar completes this 5 star restaurant.

This restaurant is a very welcome addition to the neighborhood. We eat here about once a week and absolutely love the food. The Malaysian dishes they serve are some of the best I have found in NY. We always start with a roti canai and the calamari, both amazing. And my favorite dish of all is a vegetarian malaysian curry. So good. I can't vouch for their Thai food because I haven't tried it, but their Japanese is really good - especially their specialty rolls. I highly recommend checking it out.

Hachi is a good addition to the neighborhood. I've been here a bunch of times and it's always very solid. There are a few misses on the menu -- the calamari is so salty you'll wish you had a bucket of water with you -- but most everything is above par. The space is spacious and waitstaff, while erratic, tend to be very friendly. I'm happy they opened and hope they don't leave anytime soon.

the old pet shop was one of my favorite NYC storefronts. i was sad to see it gone when this place opened. that said, maybe i'll try this place someday, the neighborhood has a few great spots, but could definitely stand a few more.
