Wombat

"This no-frills space, with its stark metal tables and black walls, looks less like a restaurant than a bar. The Down Under food, from chef Anders Goldkuhl (Patois, Caviar Russe), transcends the surroundings, including an appetizer of rare, soy-cured venison medallions and crispy buckwheat fritters," says Time Out New York.
Kathleen Squires for New York magazine says that Wombat puts "a tasty spin on meat pies (the Chicken Wellington) and burgers (Aussie–style, of ground lamb and beef, with lettuce, tomato, and pickled beets). Other items tap the world’s smallest continent’s far-flung ingredients. Wattleseed, a nutty, Aboriginal spice, enhances the yogurt dressing on the Tucker salad; Smoked Stokes Point cheddar adds an earthy, creamy garnish to a flaky tart; and the delicate white flesh of barramundi, the bounty of the Great Barrier Reef, slides right off the bone."
Yelper Ashley M. is a big fan of Wombat's Tuesday night lobster deal: "The $13 lobster dinner has to be the best lobster deal in the city... I tried the Wombat's Maine style lobster, but my dining partner's Aussie style was much tastier. Mine was a little soggy. The mango flan dessert was extremely good!" What's your take on Wombat?

Boo! Take this down!!
This is probably my favorite under the radar place in the nabe I don't tell anyone about, as it's never too crowded and I'd like it to stay that way. Very laid back and food is decent and cheap. ($1 oysters, $12 beer and burger etc)
This block of Grand is really getting alot of stuff on it - Huckleberry, Artland, the new canadian bar, wombat and bushwick country club.

i wouldn't worry too much dh. it's a nice place, but yelp will kill anything a lot quicker than a brownstoner restaurant review. i like this place, it is super mellow, nice staff, good food, pretty cheap (mega cheap during happy hour or for specials). a good local, but wouldn't really consider it a destination bar. i vaguely remember a large deep fried ball of food, maybe it was mac and cheese? good solid aussie pub grub. i do remember that we felt like fat tubs of sh*t afterwards and had to go home to nap. but then nobody's forcing anyone to eat. it's fine as a bar too.

The name is so deeply off putting to me I don't know if I could venture in here even now that I read about this tasty sounding menu. Weird.

I'm terrified of this restaurant. My friend had gotten take out here, and I have to wait outside. It is so sketchy and nutszoid. The vibes reek of crazy (not in a good way) antics.

DH, I don't know. Something about the name combined with the look of the place (?) makes me think of ....maybe of what LittlestMonster says? Maybe it's a little bit skanky looking?

very interesting menu and reliably good neighborhood spot. our area has two australian restaurants, though this is the original. they started doing brunch a couple of months ago, though I haven't been. I love what they've done with the tiny room.

I will, ha ha!
DH, do you know if there are any good sushi restaurants in Williamsburg? I have been to Kyoto and thought it was kind of gross.

mopar - I'm actually not a big sushi fan, so i haven't been anywhere in the nabe. i'll ask around though.

Interesting place. Like the Brunch menu with choice of Mimosa or Bloody Mary. I tried the Wombat Benedict and Duck Hash: one of the best poached eggs in Williamsburg (Dumont Restaurant is still the very best for poached eggs)! The only negative point is that they are not baby friendly, i.e. no high chair for infant.
