Restaurant of the Day: Motorino

Time Out New York is a fan of Motorino's margherita pizza: "the classic combination of tomato sauce, mozzarella and basil—comes straight from the dining room’s glowing masonry oven, with melted islands of buffalo-milk mozzarella on a thin layer of sweet sauce. The crust meets two critical standards: A properly blistered char and a wonderful elasticity that is so often missing from lesser examples."
And New York magazine notes that "Motorino’s wood-fired brick oven will also accommodate such freewheeling pies as the Gorgonzola-speck-and-cippolini-onion and the iconoclastic mussels and mozzarella." Pizzablogger comments on their brunch menu: "Motorino offers a very reasonable brunch. For $10, you get orange juice and one of five items offered for brunch, with Pizza al’ Uovo being one of the items (a bianca pizza topped with fior-di-latte, farm eggs, pancetta, basil and parmiggiano)." How would you rate Motorino?

One of my favorite pizza places in the whole city.

My fav pizza in Brooklyn - possibly the whole city.
Little bit pricey (avg 15 bucks for a personal sized pizza) but hey, Lucali is pushing 30 dollar pies and Di Fara charges $5 for a slice - big whoop.

this place is very, very good. I used to eat here often when I lived in the area.

I prefer Lucali to Motorino, but both are awesome.

lucali is so good. mmm. i've been meaning to try motorino but with lucali so close, it's hard to travel for pizza. btw, a pie at lucali is $24. it ain't cheap, but it's also BYOB so the budget sort of evens out. also, it seems like the wait for popular restaurants is so much longer than anywhere else (di fara's excluded, i know that wait is crazytown). there's always a line at lucali but generally the wait is 30min. in the burg, i've been to a few places where the wait is an hour or more. yeeps. i guess the hipsters don't cook at home?

Williamsburg is a destination. Walk into any popular bar/restaurant on a Fri - Sun and ask someone where they live - half will be from Manhattan

dipster - that's my point. if there's food just as good closer to home without the wait then i'm going there instead. i'm too old to try and be all hip and trendy.

I first read about this place in GQ! It got national coverage right off the bat because of the owner: Mathieu Palombino. He's from Belgium and is a classic French chef. I looked him up after meeting him at a party, and he's been at Bouley, Cello, and most recently BLT Fish, where he ran the kitchen and earned a Michelin star. This is not an average place. He just opened up his second restaurant in Manhattan.
He and his family live in Williamsburg, and they are not hipsters! (well, of course). He's a fascinating guy and has pretty much the same take on Williamsburg that I have and shares my enthusiasm. (Mainly that there's a lot of entrepreneurial and creative energy and that many here are cultural/trend leaders). And, he is also planning to raise his family in the area.
I digressed. Go eat here. Great looking casual place, and heard that perhaps now they have their liquor license?
Meanwhile, Egg will for ever be crowded, so for brunch, go to Dumont on Union off of Metropolitan - perfect eggs, french toast, bacon and unbelievable grits, and no wait. They still have their backyard open - it's covered and they have heat lamps.
AND, don't bother hating on me for my WB love. I can't help it. I love WB.
