El Pitayo

"This family-owned and operated Mexican restaurant keeps things simple... The elderly chef's grandchildren serve up staples like burritos, enchiladas and Chile Rellenos in generous portions, while his son holds court behind the bar," says Metromix. But Yelper Nate S. calls El Pitayo's food "bland and unremarkable. My main complaint, though, is with the margaritas, which were (a) exceedingly small for $7 and (b) thoroughly watered down. If you're going to serve mediocre Mexican food, at least get your patrons drunk!"
Fellow Yelper Nick F. has kinder things to say: "The waiter/bartender was very gracious and attentive, the atmosphere was nice. In a neighborhood with few Mexican options, this might be the best. I'd say the food is pretty much on par with Alma, down on Columbia street, but actually priced correctly. Sorry, no roof top views, but good enchiladas at that are worth every penny of their low price." How would you rate El Pitayo?

I don't even recognize this place in the picture. The storefront without the cheesy awning looks so much nicer!

not surprised I don't see many comment because I never see anyone eating there.

My wife, who went to college in Texas, swears by this place and thinks it's the best in the 'hood for authentic Mexican. The guacamole is excellent and the place avoids putting too much jalapeno and cilantro in everything.
I, too, wish the drinks were a bit bigger but their white wine sangria has always been an excellent choice if we are thirsty.
The staff is friendly and the redecoration is wonderful. Considering they had taken over from a sushi restaurant and not done much to it the improvement is outstanding.
I've been glad to see more people dining in recently.
Now, I do have to admit that we only live about a block away. I don't know if we would ever travel to get to a place like this but with 9 places to eat in the two blocks closest to our house this has got to be our #1 or #2 choice for something quick, hearty, and inexpensive.

As a native of Southern California, I can attest to the fact that this is Mexican food in the style that you would normally encounter in the Southwestern USA. Much "Mexican" food I have found in NYC seems actually more Cuban, if you can even taste anything other than the cilantro that half the local restaurants seem determined to smother everything with. The food in general is on the mild side but if you want it spicier, ask for it! They are very accommodating. Also, if you like good guacamole, theirs is creamy and cool and actually tastes a lot like avocado as opposed to lime, onions, or the ubiquitous cilantro.
Regarding the margaritas, pay the extra dollar or two and ask for one of their better tequilas. They usually have several available: 1800, Gold, Don Julio, Tres Generaciones, etc. It makes a difference!
Iin recent weeks they seem to be under new management or ownership or something, and the ambience has improved. Both before and after, the service has been excellent. They don't hover so you CAN get the feeling you're being ignored, but it's a small place. You can catch someone's eye and they'll be right over to help you. They seem to really care that you have what you want and are satisfied.
Even with the top shelf margaritas, I have difficulty getting a sit-down meal with table service and a drink in this area for any less money. It's not gourmet dining, but that's really not an option at these prices, and it is a nice meal in a pleasant atmosphere.

Food is really good here. Funny thing is when you call to order sometimes it takes 5 minutres for them to pick up the phone, and sometimes they don't pick up at all. Seems a crazy way to run a business.
