Metromix notes that all of Bati's vegetarian dishes are also vegan-friendly and that the owner, "first-time restaurateur (and Addis Ababa native) Hibist Legesse... keeps things modern with leather banquettes and French windows, but if you wanna sign up for the real deal, make a beeline for the traditional mesob circular seating area right up front." The Village Voice says that the "dishes of the veggie combo are as good as we’ve tasted in the city before. However, too many of the lamb and beef concoctions boil down to puddles of near-pureed meat. Of these, only ye beg tibs (lamb sautéed with green chiles) really kicked ass."

Chowhound reviews are mixed. Blueberry writes, "I am accustomed to really great Ethiopian food in Washington, DC (where there is a really large Ethiopian population) but I have not found anything in NYC that quite measures up until I ate here!" But fellow 'Hound chowbeth "Had the meat and veggie combo: that meant seven different bland dishes on a plate. 'Spicy,' 'mild,' it all tasted the same... I don't love Ghenet on Fourth Ave either, but it's better than Bati." How would you rate Bati?

I've been here several times and shared the vegetarian platter with friends. The food is delicious and you get a lot for your money. And it's no longer BYOB - they now serve wine.

When this opened, I was really excited to have an Ethiopian place in the neighborhood, but I have to say that I was disappointed by the food. I got the vegetarian platter, and most of the dishes were surprisingly flavorless and dry. I've eaten at a lot of Ethiopian places in the city, and I have to say that Bati is my least favorite. The staff is very friendly and the decor is nice, but I'd rather make the trip down 4th Avenue to Ghenet.

We ate here last Friday night, as well as the Thursday prior. The lamb in the meat combo is delicious, as are the string beans and cabbage in the vegetarian combo. The chick pea dishes could be a little spicier, but the service is so quick and attentive (and you don't have to battle crowds) that it didn't much matter to me.

Went once. Never again! The injera (bread) was cold and flavorless, the food was bland and expensive, and the service was off. Ghenet on 4th Ave is way better. There's no reason to ever eat at this place.
