"Though plenty of white-washed tables and chairs are scattered about the dining room, it's the bar that acts as a neighborhood gathering place. Couples, friends and singles convene around the dark wood bar and mingle over reasonably priced tap beers, well-mixed specialty cocktails and a steaming plate of mussels or fries," writes Erin Behan for Citysearch.

"Downstairs, a mostly deserted (and garishly lit) rec room fails to inspire much gaming, though the backyard garden is a cozy find. Cheapies and chowhounds alike will delight in the seemingly endless something-for-everyone menu," writes New York magazine's Deborah Goldberg. And Shecky's says, "The upstairs brick-walled bar area is attractively warm and more apartment-like, down to the for-looks-only fireplace, and drinks, even specialty cocktails, are moderately priced...It’s fun, it’s relaxed, it’s just like home—with Pac-Man and pomegranate martinis." Nice place...good service...good atmosphere. The food however is not as good as it use to be.

been here only for brunch - it's okay, not fabulous, and very crowded. Service is hit or miss.

We tried this place twice for brunch and the service was absolutely horrible both times. The first time they got two of three of our orders wrong and it took 40 minutes to get the new plates. The second time they forgot to put in our order and it took two and a half hours for our food to arrive. The server was unapologetic and just said "we're busy." The food was not good enough to overlook these errors and try it a third time - and there are plenty of other good restaurants nearby that value your business.

I sit at the bar and eat here pretty often. The service is excellent, the music is good, and the food is highly reliable. I love this place.

I've eaten here once and was pretty disappointed. The atmosphere towards the back of the restaurant was nice no a winter night, but the sliders were weak. What troubles me most about Apartment 138 is the smell. I walk by this restaurant at least twice a day, and it smells on the street. Having worked in a restaurant before, I recognize the smell as an uncleaned or unempty grease-trap. It's disgusting and it smells Every Day. I can only imagine what their kitchen looks like if this degree of obviously unsanitary conditions doesn't move them to action. For this reason, I'll never set foot in this place again.

I would say my wife and I have been here about 10 times over the last 4 years.
We've never been disappointed. Once or twice the service may have been a little slow, but not horrible. We always find the staff friendly and accomodating.
The food has always been good- it's not gormet, but certainly on the better side of mid-range. The prices, I think, are resonable considering the good and consistant quality and the portion size. The back outside area is very nice in the summer and they roll out the overhang if it's raining.

The last time I was there, a mouse was running around the dining area. The waiter scooped it up in a cup and threw it outside into the gutter and then proceeded to serve me my salad without washing his hands. I left without touching my food and will never go back there again.

a friend also had a mouse sighting at this place, and i've seen a roach in the dining room. i had high hopes when apt 138 opened, as it seemed like it could be the neighborhood place for quick, cheap dinner. but the food always seems to have too much grease, and leaves me feeling queasy. i finally gave up after a brunch where i ordered an omlet, very specifically said no meat (i'm a vegetarian), and it arrived not just with meat, but iwth bacon draped over the omlet. the waitress looked at me like i was crazy when i asked to have it redone--she came back with it about 30 seconds later, clearly had just removed the meat. i didn't eat it at all, and she had the gall to try to charge me for the meat! eh, i've given up.

We used to go here a lot over the last few years, but the last 2 times, the food just wasn't as good as it used to be. It was our go-to joint for dinner in the neighborhood, but something happened. Like, they used to give you bread (which was pretty good), and now they don't. That's not a dealbreaker- it's just an indication that something is different (maybe management?) We never had a problem with service, though. My girlfriend has even ordered stuff off the menu (like, shrimp cocktail) and they served it without issue. I wish I could give it higher ratings, because I used to really like the place (for food- the atmosphere's a bit too trendy for me).
