200 Fifth Restaurant & Bar

"White tablecloths on one side of the restaurant; complete sports bar on the other. Even the white tablecloth seats are within earshot of the loud TVs at the bar. Fine for casual dining- wouldn't come here for anything superfancy... There are a dizzying number of screens there- almost one for every two people, facing both sides, so no one has to crane their neck for a view. All the TVs make it deafeningly loud," says Yelper K D.
"A loyal following returns for solid Italian/American food and everybody-knows-your-name familiarity.... Weekends mean a wait for tables, but the long, burnished-wood bar, which serves more than 40 beers on tap, offers the full dinner menu and special 'bargain' fare like sandwiches and pastas," writes Michael Kaminer for New York magazine. And Metromix adds, "Families are welcome, as there's a kids' menu and crayons to keep little folks occupied." What's your take on 200 Fifth?

haven't been in years and am sure changed greatly...but was the 1st real restaurant on 5th (that stretch) that I remember opening...maybe about 1987?
before Aunt Suzie's I think.

The owner is an old school Italian-American guy from Staten Island, the son of an NYPD detective. The presentation of the food is pretty well done, considering it's a sports bar. The menu has some quality items - Beef Wellington for one thing.
There are so many TVs, one hanging more or less every four feet from the ceiling, forming a stack along which it is almost impossible not to look. they renovated and added all these TVs - it used to not be so full of screens.
While they show all the games, and the food is solid, honestly I prefer a smaller more intimate setting for public sports viewing. Best time to go here: for an early dinner. But really, you can do that anywhere.

poor service, that bartender has a douchey tude. food is average at best. and they play blaring hiphop when a major game is being shown on every tv and all the customers at the bar are clearly trying to watch. not the smartest workers there. on the plus side, great selection of taps, and a TV for every person.

I used to LOVE this place. Before they went all sports bar on me. Now it's just too loud for simple dining. To have dinner there on a game night is pretty much torture...may as well plant yourself in the middle of Flatbush Avenue with a picnic basket. The food is still pretty decent quality and value though. And they always have Lindemans Framboise...love that stuff. Now I just get the food to go. Oh, and don't order for delivery. Their delivery guy (at least the one they had a year or so ago) was always drunk and late showing up with your dinner because he had to stop off somewhere and have a couple of cold ones.

Do they still have a live salsa band on Friday nights? That was cool. It'd start really late and the bands would break for 45 mins, but still good music.

It's a sports bar! The only reason to go here is to watch sports. On Super Bowl Sunday, it's the place to be if you want to be surrounded by raucous fans -- almost as good as being there live (or as bad, depending on your point of view). For a sports bar, the food is decent.

hmmm "There are a dizzying number of screens there" + "Families are welcome, as there's a kids' menu and crayons" sounds like a nightmare.

This certainly isn't the kind of place I usually like--loud, thoroughly mediocre food, a zillion TVs, a lot of drunks... But to its credit, 200 Fifth remains one of the few places in the area where you can hang out with a true mix of people. Maybe it's partly b/c so many teachers hang out there... Really, where else can you find a lively group of people spanning all ethnicities, SESs, and politics--actually TALKING to each other?? It's kinda nice.

Dammit, you guys kinda made me change my opinion of this place. I stopped going (bc of crowds), but now remember what made it endeering was the diversity, overall positive vibe and lively crowds making game-watching fun.

This place is great for early brunch (10:30-11ish) on the weekends if you have a kid in tow. Our experience was that it was usually uncrowded at that hour, and the tables aren't jammed so tight like many other PS places, making it a lot more comfortable for a family with a grabby kid.
Also, difficult to do breakfast food badly- and a notch above standard PS "diner" fare. Not too expensive. Pancakes w/ fruit were yummy.

I'm surprised that people are so positive about the food. I'm VERY easy to please when it comes to decent bar food of the burgers-and-fries variety, and this place disappoints even with that level of food. This is the kind of place you should only come if you are nostalgic for the ambience of a frat party.

We haven't been here in a long while because we moved away from PS and this isn't a destination restaurant for us when we visit the hood. I always liked the food. My husband liked it for watching games with his friends. I appreciate any restaurant in NYC that's more spacious so there's not a wait for a table every single time you go. But I hate the stanky skunky beer smell that permeates the place, they should professionally shampoo the upholstery in there a couple times a year and do a better job mopping each night. Maybe the people in the bar watching the game don't mind the stink but for diners it's gross.

This is the first restaurant I went to when I moved to Park Slope. And I've been back many times. It IS loud and there are a lot of TVs, but I don't go in there expecting to have a quiet, romantic dinner.
I think the food is pretty good, better than the usual sports bar fare. I usually go there for burgers, and sometimes steak.

SHADY...my friend got beat up by a drug dealer in there.
I heard gunshots outside of the place one night (about 130am) in 2003....

It's a sports bar, what should you expect? Although, it may be the nicest sports bar I've ever been in- 40 beers on tap, 1,000,000 TV's, and the food is a cut-above any other sports bar that I have been in.
I don't hang out there, but I may be biased as I built the bar.
