Not to be confused with the original El Viejo Yayo on 5th Avenue near Dean Street, the unaffiliated El Viejo Yayo II is a Dominican diner located on 9th Street, near 5th Avenue. Laurel Fantauzzo for New York magazine writes: "There are burgers and even Italian dishes here, in an obligatory nod to mainstream diner fare, but the kitchen focuses squarely on its Dominican entrees. Chicken stew is sturdy and satisfying, marinated for hours, cooked with potatoes, celery and tomatoes, and served with a mountainous side of yellow rice and beans."

"This is the place for lunch specials! $5 gets you baked chicken, rice & beans, and a drink. Plus the extra-garlicky garlic bread they serve up first. I'm no glutton and i could eat a whole basket of the tostones," says Yelper Ariel P. Fellow Yelper David M. also thinks El Viejo Yayo is a bargain: "For $15.68 plus tip, I ate tostones, black beans, yellow rice, drank a guava mojito, and finished with an espresso."

And Chowhound vvv03 recommends El Viejo Yayo II for "a tasty delivery experience... I got the pernil which is an absolute show stopper, but the amazing thing was the fried sweet plantains. They were better than any I had when in Puerto Rico. Soft, sweet, not too heavy, still warm. Delicious. Worth a call." How would you rate this place?

Delicious! I love their shrimp & rice, maduros, and fried pork chops. Never tried the "American" fare.

Traditional working-man's Latin food which means there's plenty of it. Second the pernil. Nice mixed crowd. Hot waitresses!

As a Dominican, I tend to shy away from Dominican restaurants because the food never lives up to my expectations. Well, the food here is like my gradma's cooking. The food is fresh, not over seasoned and the service is great. If you are interested in trying authentic tasting Dominican food, head to El Nuevo Viejo Yayo II on skates right now!!! YUMMY!!

isn't Yayo slang for cocaine?

Their mofongos are delicious as well. I'm gonna try the pernil next. I had no idea they delivered. Bad news for my waistline.
