Bozu

"The facade of dark wood beams hints at monastic simplicity, but this raw fish and sake joint is a bit more jumbled inside. Brick walls, mod white plastic tables and a curtain of strung Japanese figurines ring the perimeter, while a large three-sided bar sits right in the middle," writes Karen Hudes for Citysearch. And Yelper Andria O. says, "Really like the space. Especially the 'outside' loft section, open enough for an early fall night but still covered in case of bad weather."
"Bozu chef-owner Makoto Suzuki has expanded the definition of Japanese tapas (if there is one) to include deep-fried kataifi-crusted shrimp, pumpkin risotto croquettes stuffed with mozzarella, and an unconventional version of sushi," says New York magazine. The Village Voice describes Bozu's sushi bombs as "sweet vinegared rice fashioned into buttons topped with fish, further surmounted with a variety of crunchy, smeary, branchy things. The party bomb presents three each of six varieties, with some room for latitude; sushi aficionados shouldn't miss it." (You can check out a photo of the party bomb on Plate of the Day.) What's your take on Bozu?

this hideous storefront does not remind me one bit of monastic simplicity.

sushi selection is limited but what's there is excellent. rest of the menu is hit or miss. I've loved some of the nontraditional small plates and I've left a couple completely untouched after a couple of bites (in particular I didn't like their version of fried chicken which is not fried enough and really, really fatty). the space is really cool and adds a lot to the experience.
between bozu, the too robata bars in the neighborhood and zen kichi, this neighborhood has some of the most interesting places in the city to drink sake and eat japanese.

Speaking of semi hidden restaurants on Grand St - has anyone been to Vutera?

I wouldn't go because of my unnatural fear of clowns!

Bozu is the only restaurant that I can award a 5-star Ambience rating. It is GORGEOUS inside -- beautiful table placements, comfy bar, very cool decor, a room lined with pickling jars, unconventional garden seating...the list goes on.
and the food gets an A+.

I totally walked by this place the other day... yes, I was actually in Billyburg. Since I didn't see anyone puking out front, that's a good sign.
