Red Hook's Viva may seem like a run-of-the-mill Mexican restaurant, but it seems like it's worth veering off Van Brunt if you know what to order. For starters, Yelper Shira B. says, "The salsa is ridiculous. They slow-bake all of the ingredients first and then blend them, so the end result is this creamy, smoky, spicy deliciousness. It is quite possibly the best salsa I've ever eaten."

And blogger Gastronormous writes, "The avocado fries were something to behold. Slices of avocado were breaded and deep fried, then arranged around a dish of chipotle dipping sauce in a seriously gigantic margarita glass. We laughed at the tacky presentation until we tasted the fries, which is when we fell into a thoughtful state of gastronomical bliss. Delicious."

The little restaurant also serves brunch, and — while we doubt it could beat the brunch at nearby Kevin'sChowhound hee jong jong says, "The huevos rancheros at Viva are fantastic, definitely worth going out of the way for." How would you rate Viva?

Those avocado fries sound insanely delicious. I'm gonna have to schlep out to Red Hook to give them a try.

completely agree with "salsa is ridiculously good" comment. i get a big container of it to go frequently although it is so fresh it really only lasts a day. i really like this place just because it is so out of the way and relaxed and the staff is so friendly. it is not amazing (aside from salsa) but it is far better than most options in brooklyn.

The avocado fries are even better than they sound.
