"At the understated corner of the quiet 6th Avenue and 12th Street resides Magnolia (not the cupcakery), an upscale neighborhood hangout offering tasty-treats like, pan seared scallops, eggs benedict, strip steaks and a $20 three-course prix-fixe deal during the week," says Metromix.

"The food, a contemporary pastiche of American pub fare in full comfort mode, with a few international excursions, usually completes the picture well. Fried calamari has a satisfying crunch, and fat steamed mussels in white wine and Dijon mustard pair up nicely with a pint," writes Jack Robertiello for New York magazine.

And Yelper Paul L. writes, "All in all, the dinner was good, not great. The scallops were very tasty, but at $23 i'd expect more than four. The salmon was a bit bland though a nice portion, and the hangar steak was actually a pleasant surprise!" What's your take on Magnolia?

Used to live around the corner from this place. Really nice place to sit outside and have a glass of wine. We went a few times for their brunch, which was awesome, but the dinner was subpar and definitely not worth the price. Haven't been in a while though.

I like this place!
it's a solid place to take your mom for brunch which is very good
The dinner was ok to good - nothing amazing - but it's a nice place in a nice locale and you can eat outside in peace.
Plus the people who own it seem very nice

I also like this place. It's away from the 5th Ave scene, and has a laid-back,cozy feel to it. The dishes I've tried have been very good - especially the ribs, which are different than your normal Tony Roma style that you find in so many places today.

I agree with the above - it's a good local to have, a nice spot to have a drink (esp on Monday night happy hour) and if feeling a bit flush the slightly too high prices for the OK food dont seem so bad.

While waiting for me my son attempted to sit at one end of the bar. It was made clear to him that he didn't belong in the section that seemed to be reserved for the owner and his buddies. Not exactly welcoming. Food has deteriorated over the last few years. The menu offered small portions of some dishes so I ordered a salad and a small portion of pasta. When I asked the waiter why I got a regular order of pasta he told me that they don't really serve small portions. Not something he bothered to tell me in advance when I might have altered my order. At any size the pasta wasn't any good.

Went there twice when it opened. First time food was barely ok but people said it was great so we thougth maybe it was an off day. Second time just as bad -- nad the whole owner at the bar thing -- you would think he would be more concerned about the food and servoce! Hard to believe it's still open.
