Water Street Restaurant & Lounge

"This enormous watering hole (located in a former iron foundry) just might be too big for its own good. Upstairs, a restaurant churns out upscale pub grub in view of a projection screen television vying for Brooklyn's biggest. Towards the back, a lounge area (in a refurbished carriage house) sticks to the tried-and-true formula of large abstract paintings over overstuffed leather couches. Downstairs, a raw space christened the UnderWater lounge is geared towards private events," writes Deborah Goldberg for New York magazine.
Chowhound joever3 hasn't always been a Water Street fan, but enjoyed a recent visit: "I had the crispy polenta with portobello mushrooms. It was excellent... I would go back anytime I'm in DUMBO and our server could not have been more attentive. She was a delight." But fellow 'Hound lazylghtng isn't a fan: " We had a cheeseburger, veggie burger, and the blackened grouper and all were vile. I am not exaggerating. The fish was bad/off. The burger was insipid... I really thought it was the pits."
Yelper Andy H. writes, "I came here for the Sunday brunch (10:30a-4p), which saw me order some perfectly made French Toast with equally delicious scrambled eggs and crispy bacon. I washed it down with some mimosas. Then I stuck around for the live band (which they have every Sunday from 1p-4p)." What's your take on Water Street?

Great space and nice staff, but the times I've gone the food has been somewhere between average and horrid. Haven't been there in a couple of years; would love to hear that things have changed.

Last time I went was last summer. Food is mediocre a best, but the staff is nice and they can accommodate a big group if you plan in advance.

Had weekend brunch there. Burger was mediocre but acceptable. Best was the mimosa. Will not return because of the justifiably terrible waiter (female, blond, not thin). Our child asked for fries...reply was that fries aren't available for weekend brunch..ok, really?..2x..15 mins later fries arrive at another table...response was "...oh, french fries are not on BRUNCH menu, that table ordered from the OTHER menu...WTF...
Either she was lazy or too dumb to process. Feels trivial writing about french fries, but you asked...hope the owners read.

New to the area and have tried this place half a dozen times over the last 6 months. Not a lot to choose from down here, and it's a short walk. Really wanted to like it, but to be honest the food is at best, mediocre...the average diner serves up tastier fare. Staff is pleasant enough, but the last straw was the tray of 4 drinks dumped in my lap by the waitress. I actually had to ask them, twice, to adjust the bill - they didn't even want to take my order off the tab.

Food is a hit or miss. One home run are the Old Bay wings. Not a traditional buffalo wing, but the dry Old Bay rub is great and they are usually cooked perfectly.
Good beer selection and drinks are reasonable.
Staff has always been very friendly and attentive.

Food's decent. Good oysters, wings, bar food in general. Entrees don't really appeal to me. Chill place, good beer.

I have only tried this place once, and I would like to go more, because it is in a great location! I got the burger, which was just standard for being $16. Also, I sat at the bar, and received horrible service, esp. since the bartender was standing in front of me most of the time. Finally, a roach appeared on the bar next to our burgers, and when we told them, the bartender seemed non-chalant and tried to kill the roach (unsuccessfully, as it dropped to the floor and disappeared). We received no sympathy or offer of a discount. I know roachs are typical in restaurants - I used to work with one - but to receive no apology or awknoledgment that it was at least a gross situation seemed like bad customer service.
