"This bustling South Slope sports bar has three flat-screens and a Sicilian pizzaiolo manning a beehive brick oven. Despite a seemingly schizophrenic concept, Toby’s twelve-inch pies are much more satisfying than your typical pub grub," says New York magazine.

"The Tartufata pie is great. It has black truffle cream sauce, baked Italian ham, ricotta, mushrooms and truffle oil. It's very rich and satisfying. It's also $18 which brings me to my biggest issue with Toby's, i.e. the prices... After one shared small salad, 2 pizzas, 2 sodas and tip we dropped $60. So although we enjoyed the meal there was an 'ouch' feeling afterwards," writes Chowhound rd135.

Erin Zimmer for Serious Eats suggests eating light for dinner and saving room to share "the $13 calzone dessert, stuffed with Nutella and fresh ricotta... So massive, the calzone needs a metallic pizza round instead of a normal plate, and doesn't even merit the normal fork-and-knife routine; it's a hands-only food." How would you rate Toby's Public House?

Good taps. Pizza is a tad high for the fare, but it's nice to have a mix in the 'nabe. I personally HATE the tv's, but that's me. When I'm at a bar, I like to be "at the bar." I can watch TV at home.

Moretti on tap was a big hit. Staff's a bit surly, in an attempt I guess to give it a "locals only" vibe. They are still a wee bit young for that attitude.

All in all a good addition to the 'nabe.

Had pizza and beer there a few weeks ago. Was fun to sit outside and ambiance was good. Pizza was average, and I thought it was overpriced for what it was. Seemed to have a neighborhood vibe with most ppl walking by knowing the staff. Overall, I enjoyed the experience except for the $.

Also hate the TV's, and they dominate the space. But the pizza was well above average. Perhaps average for brick-oven, but beats the crap out of your typical ny pie. Agree that they should knock a dollar or two off the price. Their price-point makes me slightly hesitant to return. (though I will, I will)

Also, they sell Scratchbread focaccia made by Matthew Tilden which by itself makes it worth a visit. It's really delicious.

Like this place a lot. Great pizza...not cheap but not outrageous either. The staff is really nice. Great vibe.

Very nice, sweet and attentive wait staff. Pizza my wife and I have had is definitely above average, even at the price. Could probably stand to lose a TV or two...but I'm sure I'll be appreciating it come football season. This is everything you want in a local haunt -- good food, good service, nice compatriots.

Sweet place..... we sat outside on a Sunday evening as the sun went down and it was great, but I am not sure about the inside....the TVs going would have made me leave. Our server was a doll, if a little overeager....one of the people with us is from Northern Italy and she immediately recognized a fellow countryman in the kitchen from the menu. Our pizzas were excellent, if a tiny bit underdone for my tastes. Loved the Peroni on tap. Note: I clicked on "very over-priced" but I too would have just picked "overpriced". We didn't die of shock, but it seemed more than three pizzas (they are individually sized) and three beers should have been.

So, I went there this evening with my girlfriend (she lives just a few blocks away). We just went in for dessert and a drink or two. My girlfriend ordered gelato dessert and asked for a hot chocolate when the waitress snapped at her and said "we don't do that around here, it's 85 degrees outside and you want hot chocolate!?"

REALLY? My gf was born a few blocks away from here and has lived in the 'nabe her whole life. REALLY? As for the 85 degrees comment, do people not drink coffee or espresso with their dessert at 10pm at night? It was really unnecessary.

Aside from that, the dessert was pretty good, my gin & tonic was well balanced and my girlfriends pino (what she got after feeling humiliated) was good as well.

However, the kicker is when the tab came. They're cash only with an ATM that works 40% of the time (due to weak cell signal) yet this quasi-ATM still hit up my checking account for the needed funds.

Definitely seemed cool. I would go back with a bunch of friends.
