Eclectic/Global

Menu

"Part video parlor but all restaurant, Monkey Town is nothing if not unique," writes Peter Meehan for the New York Times. "The dining room has an industrial-romantic vibe: Smooth cement floors are dotted with candles, low tables and futonlike couches. In the back is a 48-seat screening room with four floor-to-ceiling screens," says Time Out New York.

"The menu offers eclectic global cuisine like kafir lime meatballs and braised squid--what Monkeytown describes as 'food from a country that doesn't exist,'" says Citysearch. The shows in the back room are as eclectic as the menu options. Daniel Maurer for New York magazine says, "You'll find art-house movies, indie shorts, documentaries, trippy audiovisual shows, and live music performances, with certain weeks dedicated to themes like dance and porn. Since the screening room only seats a few dozen, you’ll want to reserve in advance and arrive early." What do you think about MonkeyTown?

Porn screenings and numerous PBR open bars. Nuff said.

I've been to some great music/video shows here. I always feel bad for the waiters and waitresses who have to serve food and drink during shows to patron on those weird low couches (in the almost dark, with wires strewn all over the place.) The first time I thought the food was trying way too hard to be interesting. The last time I had a quinoa-sotto (or something like that) which was very tasty. I call it semi-pretentious fun.

Btw, there should be a choice for "overpriced" because "very overpriced" is quite a jump from "about right"!

Sounds annoyingly like several restaurants in San Francisco during the height of the dot-com boom. I assume the food is disgusting.

Yeah - I'm curious about the food. Anyone care to elaborate? The menu looks interesting.

I ate there last night...both my belly and my wife's are very unhappy. It was a cool performance space and I'll go back there for entertainment, but I won't be ordering a meal there again.

omg this place still exists? Very awesome idea when it started. And tasty. Where was it, somewhere off the graham/grand stop? I went to this location once far back in the day. Literally forgot about it, though. Didn't they almost close a few years ago?

I haven't been in a while. I've probably been about three times in the past four years. Every time I found the food good and interesting. It's a pretty cool spot with really interesting design. I would say it's worth checking out!
