"I head straight over to Mitchell's for some authentic, comforting Southern cooking -- Mitchell's IS country. Mrs. Mitchell and her team serve up the real deal, absolute soul food that will leave you feeling nothing but cozy inside," writes Yelper Paula H.

"Mitchell's offers the standards: knock-out fried chicken with more black pepper than flour in the supremely crisp crust, mac and cheese with little squiggles of cheddar, collards laced with smoked turkey wing, and pork ribs slathered with barbecue sauce and oven-roasted," says the Village Voice.

Chowhound Rodrigo agrees, "I had some amazing fried chicken at Mitchell's Soul Food Restaurant on Vanderbilt (near Bergen). The skin was crispy with a slightly spicy, peppery batter. The meat was juicy and tender. The restaurant lacks physical ambiance but there were lots of friendly neighborhood folks popping in for take-out." Seems like the only complaint about this place is that it's closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. How would you rate Mitchell's?

I live in the area, but can't say I've been. I'm always thrown off by the Quizno's sign in the window though.

Great neighborhood joint for those in-the-know. Total hole-in-the-wall with absolutely no ambience, but amazingly good soul food. Fried chicken is some of the best in the area, but the sides are also great. The owner was very friendly when we ate there with our kids. Prices are low, considering how good the food is.

Mitchells might not have contemporary decor but one thing I know is that you can eat off their floors. This restaurant is kept very clean. The friendly staff makes it worth waiting for that fresh fried delicious chicken. The food overall is good and they deliver as well. While you are at it throw in a piece of their sliced cakes for dessert and you are good to go.

Go there this Sunday. The street will be closed to cars and you can eat outside and get all the ambience you need.

I discovered Mitchells two weeks ago when I went to Prospect Heights for the car-free Vanderbilt event. It was great! I'm planning on eating lunch there again on Sunday.
