"Following a 35th anniversary makeover completed in late 2008, this Williamsburg onetime greasy spoon now boasts a shiny new look, full bar, live lobster tank, and proper entrance (no more walking through a convenience store to be seated). Beyond the neon sign outside and the hip, florescent red lights hanging above the bar, higher quality eats arrive on stylish, modern dishware," writes Daniel Benjamin for New York magazine.

"This neighborhood standby has been satisfying appetites for burgers, Greek salads, eggs, waffles and other diner staples for decades. Just east of the BQE, it remains one of the area's only choices for filling your stomach after a late night out," writes Karen Hudes for Citysearch. The Village Voice adds, "If Williamsburg wasn't totally wicked awesome, this would just be a diner. But no, it's somehow special because it's the only place open when a bunch of drunken rock stars need cream of mushroom soup or Belgian waffles in the middle of the night." How would you rate this place?

This place is really, really bad. Besides being open 24-hours I can't think of anything I like about it.

The new exterior looks beautiful, but I've heard so much about how the food is the worst ever in all of history in the whole world, I've never tried it.

Ugh. I hate this place with all of my soul. Or, I hate what it has become. I grew up eating here after church on many Sunday mornings, when it had diner prices, friendly waitresses and good, fast service. The prices have been higher than what a diner should be for years, and the service was horrid on my two visits there since the makeover. Almost an hour to get fries and a milkshake - I sh*t you not. Kellogs, we had some good times together, and I have so many fond memories of eating here with my family. You've sold your soul to the new Gods of Billyburg, and you are dead to me.

Before this place I had never been inspired to write a bad review online. Yet, after giving it a second chance upon it's re-opening several months ago, I found it necessary to air my grievances on Yelp concerning my cold disgusting food, and poor service. I'm not going to go into it again, as I've blocked the memory for the most part. It is just a shame, because this WOULD be a great location, and Could have great food. I would love to have a 24 hour diner that was at least decent. Even by diner standards this place is a tragedy. Plus- even after the massive renovation the interior still looks like it was designed in the early 90's.

Probably the worst dining establishment I've ever been in.
There is never a good time for this place - even when it's 5am and your drunk and stoned off your ass and need something to eat.

meowster wrote a review on June 3, 2009 1:11 PM

Avoid this mess. Horrible. I got a knife pulled on me in '99 for trying to enter the bathroom! Buy bread and eggs at a bodega if it's 3am and go home and cook. You'll be better off.

more4less wrote a review on June 3, 2009 1:16 PM

close up shop cause the Williamsburg bars & restaurant authority (DH) has spoken. never been there but was assuming from the looks of it that it would be solid svc and food - how wrong was that assumption

WBer wrote a review on June 3, 2009 1:22 PM

I haven't been to the new version, but the old place was horrible. I would have thought such horridness was organic and not capable of replication, but reading the comments here, I stand corrected.

(Since I haven't been to the reopened version, I won't rate it here.)

Hahah M4L
This is what it used to look like:

Although I think it has gotten worse since it's renovation last year. (only been twice)
Can't always judge a book by it's cover!

Wow, I was going to comment that there is nothing better than a good, all-round diner, but I guess this place ain't it. Never been here, never will, from these reviews.

infinitejester wrote a review on June 3, 2009 1:31 PM

I always knew Citysearch and the Village Voice sucked...if they miss the boat so completely on this, then look out.

"Buy bread and eggs at a bodega if it's 3am and go home and cook." WOW. That bad.

ennuiater wrote a review on June 3, 2009 2:00 PM

It's terrible. Most generic diners can at least get eggs right. Kelloggs- not so much. Ugh.

MAT wrote a review on June 3, 2009 2:42 PM

Why you are even posting this is a mystery to me. No rating needed, this place was barely 'fine' when you were desperate for eggs and pancakes in 1995. I can't even imagine having any reason to walk in here circa 2000 and beyond.

All true, though bringing up a knifing story from a decade ago shouldn't be allowed. There's more risk of e coli than a mugging now.

PitbullNYC wrote a review on June 3, 2009 3:21 PM

based on the reviews only, i So want to check this place out now hahahah

*rob*

Based on these reviews, I want to taxi over to Williamsburg simply to enjoy the pleasure of walking past this place and not going in!

dirty_hipster wrote a review on June 3, 2009 3:31 PM

I think this might take the cake for worst restaurant in Brooklyn reviewed on Brownstoner (with a significant amount of reviewers)

etson wrote a review on June 3, 2009 3:35 PM

Agree jester. Would you trust a reviewer that described anywhere as 'totally wicked awesome' (not hating on Williamsburg, just the Village Voice)? Somehow I think s/he tweets about his / her Brooklyn Flea experiences as well.

Forget the knifing story. There was a Forking incident there in November.

Probably the worst restaurant I've ever been to. And I was drunk. And starving. And I only ate one fry. (It was so bad, cooked in ancient oil.) Never again. Thing is - I know people who love this place and go out of their way to go there. So sad.

wine lover wrote a review on June 3, 2009 5:09 PM

average at best. ironically, dumont is right across the street and has my favorite brunch. it's hilarious because kelloggs isn't even much cheaper. the eggs at dumont are perfect as is the french toast. great bacon too.

if dumont is open, doesn't hesitate! cross the street!!!

Big Jugs wrote a review on June 3, 2009 6:01 PM

I do not exaggerate when I say this is the worst diner on the planet. I gave it three chances and each time was worse than the last. Really, how can you screw up a grilled cheese sandwich, fries, and a chocolate shake? Steer wide and clear, folks!

sixyearsandcounting wrote a review on June 3, 2009 6:50 PM

Is this the diner where a customer stabbed a waiter in the ass with a fork a few months back?

forum22 wrote a review on June 5, 2009 12:00 PM

don't be misled by these reviews. This is a great place to eat. The bad reviews are bogus. It appears people are jealous and want to take business away from them since they are so busy and there is a line to get in most of the time; and since they've opened, the other nearby establishments are not doing so well. Is Dumont paying y'all to write these bad reviews? I wonder! No one should ever be misled by bad reviews - ever. Breakfast is great; so is lunch and dinner. And it is a very safe place to be, since there is a police precinct directly underground in the subway station. The cops are always around. when Kellog's Diner was closed it looked like a ghost town in that area. I'm glad they are back. Give them a break, pick on another establishment.

piminnowcheez wrote a review on June 5, 2009 5:59 PM

I'm glad it's not just me... I had to go here a few times before I could finally bring myself to believe that there could really be an all-night diner that was bad even when you're drunk and hungry in the wee hours, even when you're hung over, even when a couple of fried eggs and greasy white toast are all you really need. It's kind of astonishing, but all the sentiments above (except forum22 - !?) conform well to my experience.

As for the remodel, the first time I went past the place after reopening, and had a look at the menu, all I could think was, "why would you want to do this to a diner?" I mean, live lobster? Why?

I notice that none of the media reviews quoted in the post can actually come around to saying that the place, or the food, is *good*.

(But maybe I'm just jealous?)

WillBklyn wrote a review on June 8, 2009 10:44 PM

HELLHOLE!
I haven't eaten there in years, but a friend of mine made that mistake recently & confirms it still stinks, only now it's no longer cheap!

By the way in the late 80's early 90's a tanker truck crashed into it and it burned - then it was remodeled into the ugly stucco thing. Now another remodel! I prayed it would be torn down when the rest of the block was being reduced to rubble but NO! The Evil Thing Cannot Die!!

For the longest time it was the only place to get bodega style groceries around the Lorimer stop, so that was a plus for it. But that hasn't been true since Hana Food opened.
