Last year, after about 50 years of business, House of Pizza & Calzone underwent some renovations. According to Lost City, "Cramped before, the pizzeria is now ridiculously spacious. In a nod to the past, the old, boxy, gray-marble tables are still in use. Above them are some modern lighting fixtures, attached to warm brown walls... And the pizza. Still good, still the same."

Chowhound Thissteaks4you recommends House of Pizza & Calzone as "My preference for a neighborhood slice joint (as opposed to a place where you order by the pie)...They have great grandma slices." Fellow 'Hound boccalupo agrees about the slices but is "Not crazy about the deep fried calzones at House of Pizza. Maybe I've been spoiled by Lucali's calzone (best I've ever tried)."

Yelper Justin S., however, is a fan of the calzones here: "I must say they are glorious... Filled with ricotta, mozzarella and ham, wrapped up and tossed in the deep fryer, it's exactly as it sounds. I expected some kind of glorified egg roll-type contraption, but the result was actually much better, thank God." How would you rate this place?

This not oft-discussed Columbia Street Waterfront has been getting much love in the ROTD column lately. I'll have to venture down there; it seems there are a few places worth checking out.

The Fried Calzones are great. They lose something on Friday's without the ham, but deep frying them is the only way to have them. Very few places (I know of three) actually fry their calzones. A baked one doesn't even compare. They are not in the same league. The upside down pie is also something wonderfull.

The pizza here is good. It's not thin crust like Lucali, but it is a nice place to grab a good slice and it also has a nice open backyard area.

I love this place. It's always my choice for slices as well as delivery. Great rice balls as well as all the usual pizzeria offerings. But ever since the reopening after renovations, the delivery is absolutely awful. In roughly 6 or 7 deliveries, they only got to me in under an hour once, and otherwise it's generally been an hour and fifteen or twenty minutes. I have no idea what the problem is, but when you can't get a pie ten Brooklyn blocks in under an hour, it's a problem. Please guys, sort this out or I'm going to have to give up!

This place was owned by a cousin of my father's. They sold, I believe a year or two ago. I remember my father trying to get us to the roof to see the Macy's fireworks in honor of the Statue of liberty anniversary on July 4th (I believe) '88 (I was 8). Place had been in the family since its est. I hope the new owners continue to use real buffalo mozzarell!

I want to update my comments, because it almost seems as if the House guys saw this and did something about it. Or maybe other complaints finally sunk in? Not sure, but I ordered twice in the last week, and both times the guy on the phone told me "30 minutes." I was doubtful, but they nailed it or faster both times. New delivery guy, too. Addition? Replacement? I dunno, but heartfelt thanks to House of Pizza for the upgrade. Waiting as long as we had to in the past was torture!
