Best sandwiches in Brooklyn? Chowhound JessicaSophia says, "City Sub, hands down... [They] use wonderful bread and fresh ingredients. All of the toppings (lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, etc) are shaved on the meat slicers so they're really fine and crisp-- I'm not sure why that makes them so good, but it does."

"Fillings extend beyond thinly sliced ham, turkey and salami to Cajun-style roast beef, crabmeat-and-shrimp salad, and tuna fish with scallions. With enough seating for about twelve people (the largest table is ominously right under a dartboard), this business is built for takeout, especially on weekend afternoons when the line has been known to go out the door," writes Stephen Bracco for New York magazine.

And Yelper Veena V. has a sandwich tip for the meat-adverse, "If you're a vegetarian and you want something tangy, spicy and delicious, try my standard: spicy mustard, lettuce, tomato, onion, sweet and banana peppers, provolone cheese, salt, pepper and oregano and oil and vinegar on the veggies." What are your thoughts on this place?

I used to go here all the time when I lived in Prospect Heights. The subs were always tasty and generously proportioned.

best sandwich in the area hands down. this would explain why there is always a long line on the weekends

subatomic wrote a review on June 19, 2009 1:41 PM

I first found about City Subs 5 years ago -- completely awesome. Yes, long lines, but they take their time making each sandwich with such care and diligence. I haven't been there in a while but I remember the chess boards they had in the back; do they still have them there?

Oh Biff, now you've gone and made this sandwich thread all dirty, like those disturbing Quizno's ads with the lascivious talking oven:

Snark, that is the second filthiest commenrcial after this one from the early '80s. Apologies if you saw me post it before:

This place has wonderful bread if you've never had bread before; otherwise it's mediocre. Go to 5th Ave deli instead...which delivers, too.

How come I don't see any girls walking in there?

ENY, you're the only poster I know that comes to Brownstoner for his or her porn!

Best sandwich in Park Slope maybe, but the best sandwich in Brooklyn has gotta be the meatball sub at Esposito's on Court Street! Heeeeaaaaven! Dafonte's is pretty awesome too.

I love this place. LOVE. Try to go at least once a week. YUM. Fantastic sandwiches, never any seating on weekends but best thing to take to the park w/ a bag o chips and a beverage.

billybrooklyn wrote a review on June 21, 2009 10:54 AM

The best sandwich in Brooklyn! Love it. I get number 13 with toasted scooped out bread. The scoop out approach allows you to eat an entire sandwich without overloading the stomach with bread.

Great simple Subs with simple fresh ingredients, still not as good as Farmers Deli in Clinton Hill, but when I lived next to them I ate there quite often.
