Cheryl's Global Soul

Cheryl's Global Soul was recommended to us by Carol Gardens and Shoots and Leaves, who says that Cheryl's has "by far the best pancakes I've ever had. Everything is amazing there, but the pancakes are something else. It's on Underhill Ave in Prospect Heights." Chowhound kaydeesquared is another fan of Cheryl's brunch: "I always get the salmon platter which has egg, avocado, capers, and huge fat pieces of salmon. And they do know how to make a Bloody Mary."
"Located just a short walk from the Brooklyn Museum of Art, this cozy eatery is helmed by celebrity chef Cheryl Smith, former star of the Food Network’s Melting Pot. As the name suggests, the menu here travels the world of comfort food, with prolonged layovers in Asia and Northern Africa," writes Ken Switzer for New York magazine.
But Time Out New York isn't totally impressed: "While there are occasional bursts of brilliance (the chicken wings have an amazing allspice kick)... Most of the food was merely passable: The giant half barbecue chicken had an overly sweet, gloppy glaze, and the sautéed shrimp were accompanied by bland bok choy." How would you rate this place?

Is it just me or does anyone else instantly, in an almost Rorschach-y way, read "Chernobyl" with this restaurant's name?

I totally do not trust the judgment of Time Out New York on anything.

I live around the corner from Cheryl's. I like the food and the neighberhood atmosphere. Still, I only eat there occassionally because I feel it is a little pricey for the level of service and culinary experience.
If it was a better value, Id be there a lot. Definitely worth a try.

ate here once. people running the place are very nice but the food was really not good at all. i can't rate the value because bad food isn't worth much, even though as i recall the prices were reasonable.

I heard about this place, some friends like it, some other had hard time recovering after a meal overthere: decided to look at the health inspection results before going. Always a good idea. I suddenly didn't feel hungry at all.

I actually only went here once (about a year ago) and had a lovely meal. I was looking for a casual place near the Brooklyn Museum and this place hit the spot. I had the Sake Glazed Salmon--don't know if they serve that anymore. I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere of the outdoor seating. I see that some people didn't like it as much as I did!

Stupid Time Out. Anyway, I can weigh in on non-brunch items since I've never been there besides brunch. I've never felt sick or sluggish after eating there. Very friendly service.

they mis-use their spices for my taste....though i definitely never got sick here...

We always enjoy Cheryl's though I can't comment on brunch (which I avoid at all restaurants on principal). Only downside is sometimes they get too busy but I love the food and Cheryl is fabulous.

Went there once relatively early on a Saturday. All tables full, no place to stand, instructed by the staff to wait outside, did so, another party showed up a few minutes later and were seated at "our" table, we left. Maybe because I have worked in restaurants, both in the front and the back of the house, I have no patience for this kind of ineptitude. Probably have eaten at Tom's 40 times since this experience.

Love Cheryl's; it gets busy on the weekend, but otherwise is fairly easy to get a table. Excellent sandwiches, fries, etc. Not a fancy restaurant, but the food is fresh, veggie-friendly and tasty. One of our frequent stops. Very relaxed joint, friendly waitstaff (though yes, the waitstaff doesn't always seem like they're foodservice lifers. But this ain't the four seasons.)
