Cafe Glechik

"This Ukrainian-Russian neighborhood joint, adorned with folk costumes, babushkas and random tchotchke, churns out tasty peasant fare to satisfy most carnivorous cravings. Potatoes or buckwheat kasha and a salad accompany all the hefty entrées—from chicken gizzards stew to kebabs and beef Stroganoff," says Time Out New York.
But Cafe Glechik is best known for its "superlative dumplings. Pelmeni and vareniki are the two varieties—served in batches of twenty-five—and both have supple, silky skins. (The pelmeni are bunched into furrows, while the vereniki are more like pierogi,)" writes Ethan Wolff for New York magazine. The huge batches only cost $4.50 to $6.50 per order, and are also available in frozen to-go bags.
"The green borscht is my pick among the restaurant's soups, which include a more traditional beet borscht and a chicken soup with mini-pelmeni, both $5. The green one is made with rice, egg and sorrel, cooked in a fashion that tames its characteristic lemony sourness," writes Peter Meehan for the New York Times. How would you rate this place?

sebb, are you talking about the woman in the picture or DIBS?
East New York wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:28 PM
Nice junk in her trunk.
Biff Champion wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:33 PM
ENY, eating Russian food from the time of one's birth is certain to put lots of junk in anyone's trunk.
sebb wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:35 PM
I was speaking about DIBS of course
sebb wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:35 PM
Just kidding DIBS
Biff Champion wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:40 PM
DIBS doesn't like junk in the trunk; he prefers a drunk punk hunk's trunk's spunk in his bunk.

I love this place. I think it is as authentic as you can get. The place is one of those gems that makes New York worth the hassel and the expense.
Kensingtonian wrote a review on June 17, 2009 12:59 PM
Lincoln it is not as authentic but pretty close. Biff, the place that I had in mind is by the same owners but in Midwood instead of Brighton Beach. Should be fun.
This place is definitely the definition of greasy food so the comments about the round bottom is in accordance with that.
PitbullNYC wrote a review on June 17, 2009 1:05 PM
u dont get a butt like that from greasy food, that is all genetics.

g10...Oh yeah she can. Been there, done that....
Rob, try telling that to russian women.
Biff Champion wrote a review on June 17, 2009 1:39 PM
Note to Mr. B: in order to generate on-topic posts under the restaurant of the day thread, ensure picture of restaurant does not include fat bottomed girl smack dab in the middle of it.

russian women definitely have those matrushka bottoms, but most ive known are thin. sadly, all young russian women (thin or not) seem to turn into heavy babushka wearing things when they get older.
gemini10 wrote a review on June 17, 2009 1:52 PM
what's a matruskha?
dirty_hipster wrote a review on June 17, 2009 2:05 PM
This is probably the coolest review for a restaurant ever.
Kara will make note not to have any babies with back in future restaurant photos.
kensingtonka wrote a review on June 17, 2009 2:07 PM
Gemini, I suspect it's a "matryoshka" who ate too many "vatrushkas". But you'd better ask Goldie, such an expert in Russian women she is.
Back on topic: the "Glechik" place is great.
goldie wrote a review on June 17, 2009 2:48 PM
gemini, i misspelled the word, but its those russian nesting dolls with the wide bottoms and small tops.
