Brooklyn Bread Cafe

Brooklyn Bread was recommended by our own Shoots and Leaves when we asked for Restaurant of the Day nominations: "I've never had such a strong reaction to a sandwich. Best sandwich I've ever had." Tina Barry for The Brooklyn Paper writes, "Brooklynites who frequent Paneantico Bakery and Cafe in Bay Ridge and Royal Crown Pastry Shop in Bensonhurst are familiar with [baker Sal] Scudero’s artisanal loaves and light hand with pastry. At The Brooklyn Bread Cafe he’s piling up focaccia and baking all manner of Italian sweet treats."
"The main squeeze here is the bread-- get it by the loaf, the bagel, the sandwich, the french toast, and on and on," writes Yelper Preeti B. Fellow Yelper aitsu i. adds, "The sandwiches are the real winners here. They are sick. They use great ingredients, make excellent bread, and get the proportions right. Breakfast OR lunch... The only letdown, and this is a serious one, is that the coffee sucks... I wish almost every day that Brooklyn Bread would take care of things and get the brewing sorted out. " How do you feel about Brooklyn Bread?

That much is true. They made of the worst expressos I've ever had. The canolli was adequate.

The food is good here, solid standard Italian bakery fare. However their young employees (am talking kids under 23) really have a lot of "tude" and are a bit scatterbrained

The only thing I ever got here was a ciabatta roll -- and it's likely the only thing I'll ever get as there was a big hair baked into it. Yuck! The staff are very friendly, though.

Terrible bagels, and I much prefer the bread at mazzola

The breads are great. Consequently, the bagels and sandwiches are excellent. Good italian meats, peppers, etc. Otherwise, this place has some infuriating problems that keep it from being really good.
The pastries and other desserts are easily the worst of any place in the neighborhood. They look nice in the store, but I'd like to hear if anyone says that they've actually liked the desserts. "Adequate" is about the best that they get.
The staff has its problems, too. They're usually friendly, but they often struggle to get orders right, especially when there's more than one customer at a time (and, that's when they kick it in to low gear and get inexplicably slow). It's maddening.

Sorry, but I have to complain as I don't think this is a great local spot! I have been in this place several times, order the same thing, and it is always a different price. I always order a single egg & cheese on a croissant, the first time I ordered it, the barista basically told me I didn't want only 1 egg & I persisted to tell her I definitly did! The charge for single egg & cheese on a croissant was 5 dollars, which I think is a little expensive but it was ok. The second time I went in to order the same thing someone else told me I couldn't have single egg (although I previously had it), it was only made with 2 and they couldn't do single. Ummm... I thought I was the customer here? Finally after an arugment I just gave up and got the 2 eggs with cheese. I was charged 5.50, I was mad at this point and just wanted to get out of there. I didn't go back for a while but finally did & the 3rd time after once again it being a hassle to give me a single egg and cheese, the barista asked some guy how much it was and he said 7.50!!! 7.50?? For a single egg & cheese on a croissant! I told them both there was no was I was paying 7.50 when I had paid 5.00 before so FINALLY they got out their menu and figured out it was only 4.50! I was overcharged 3 times.. which is my fault because I shouldn't have went back.
Seriously, local business' depend on the locals! They shouldn't be overcharging or charging different prices each time you go there, or giving you a hassel for ordering what you want. This place has never been my favorite, the staff has no idea how to run the place or what the prices are, and although there food isn't bad the hassel & overpricing as they please just aren't worth it! Treat your customer's better people!
