Whiskey Sunday - CLOSED

Sarah DiGregorio for the Village Voice explains the naming and renaming of this PLG BBQ joint: "It was [originally] called Billy Sunday's, in a tongue-in-cheek ode to a famous prohibitionist, but apparently Billy was known for not only hating booze and being an evangelist, but also for being a rabid racist, soooo... that name was soon nixed in favor of Whiskey Sunday."
Metromix reports that Whiskey Sunday, a member of the Jim Mamary restaurant family, has "an on-site smoker [that] pumps out St. Louis-style ribs, pork shoulder and beef brisket—served on brown paper and sold per half pound ($7)." And Yelper Beth G. appreciates that atmosphere: "The water is served in empty liquor bottles, the beer is served in used jars, the napkins are in coffee cans, and the bathroom's got an outhouse-style wood plank door."
But Time Out New York only gave Whiskey Sunday 2 out of 6 stars: "Of the 'cue we tried, only the St. Louis pork ribs were a success, sporting a crispy crust, melting fat and yielding meat. But beef cheeks, instead of being soft and gelatinous, were firm and dry—a problem that also plagued the pork shoulder and couldn't be remedied with any of the three house-made sauces." What's your take on this place?

only went there when they were first opening, so am not sure how things are now that they've been up and running for some time. but the food was great (not the best bbq, but this is not the south), staff incredibly friendly and the beer selection excellent. and the prices - more than reasonable.

I like this place, although, since I can't eat BBQ that often, I prefer Whiskey Sunday's "big brother" and next door neighbor Enduro (which has a connecting door). FWIW I also preferred the original "Billy Sunday's" name, because that old bastard would have spun in his grave at the thought of having a bar, in a neighborhood like our's, named after him.

BTW, that's a TERRIBLE photograph. Whoever took it would have had to work hard to get a shot when W.S's was open, but Enduro, next door , had it's ugly gate pulled down :-(

Some things are always good (like the pulled pork and the banana pudding); others are very inconsistent. Order the same thing three times and you never know whether it'll be delicious and juicy or dry and chewy. Take out is a better bet than eat-in, as the service is sketchy.

Funny, the one time I ordered the banana pudding it was completely liquid -- not pudding at all. Cheddar biscuits are OK, and the fried mac'n'cheese, which should be life-changing just going by the name, is blah -- but maybe that's a case of too-high-expectations. Beef rib is awesome every time I've had it -- totally tender, just smokey-flavored enough --comes in 1/2 pound installments only. Ditto the beef cheeks comment above, same for the pork belly. Collard greens were sandy once, very good the next. Think they're still fine-tuning them. Management, as always in Jim's places, is very receptive to feedback -- once when I was there, my boyfriend mentioned that he'd like smoked turkey wings and voila -- there they were next Sunday. A very family-friendly place, too. Good beer selection. I really like the sandwiches - they're a respite from the too-heaviness of everything else.
However, I still prefer Enduro's just because Whiskey Sunday's is a lot of meat -- and I'm not that big a meat eater -- plus the margaritas and sheer force of habit.

Has anyone been to both Whiskey Sunday and Fette Sau and care to compare? (they both seem like similar)
Last time I went to FS it wasn't so good, so I'm curious if this place is worth the trek for BBQ.

Correction to my 1:16 post--the ugly gate in the photo is W.S's right side gate--not Enduro's.

We like going to this place for family meals. The prices are amazing, as is the beer selection. I like the pork ribs and collard greens.

i like this place even though the quality is unreliable - i grew up eating bbq in texas so my taste buds are honed towards that style. the laid back atmosphere and super nice staff keep me coming back. i don't drink so i can't comment on their beer selections.
pork rib is consistently great. the 12 hour brisket was too until the last time i ordered it - took a few bites and threw it out. the rest of the meats are ok. i can get similar and cheaper at the dominican place on flatbush though.
cheese biscuits were excellent the first time. average twice after. same with baked beans. sweet potato mash is great. collard greens are good. the banana pudding is bland.
