Williamsburg's Walter Foods is recommended by both mopar and dirty hipster, who writes, "I'm always skeptical when it comes to places in our neighborhood as I feel the food quite often comes secondary to the 'scene', but Walter Foods really blew me away."

"Barrio Chino owner Dylan Dodd and former Balthazar bartender Danny Minch opened this Grand Street bistro and raw bar where bow-tied waiters present stiff cocktails and sturdy American dinner fare," writes Sarah Horne for New York magazine. Time Out New York says, "The dinner menu, meanwhile, is populated with hit-the-spot standbys: There’s a formidable French-dip sandwich—moist slices of filet mignon in a crackling baguette—and a heaping plate of juicy fried chicken, with a greaseless, well-seasoned crust."

Chowhound CalJack describes Walter Foods as having "excellent food, similar price point to Marlow, definitely more spacious, somewhat scene-y depending on the hour." Fellow 'Hound malibu writes, "They have GREAT oysters and raw bar. Their presentations are works of art. The service is top notch and I'm not sure, but they may take ressies as well." How would you rate this place?

Love this place. I have been going since it opened on day one. Everything is great. I really like the lobster club, and the steaks are great! Also, don't skip a nice big plate of oysters. Not into spendy/fancy cocktails myself, but if that is your thing, this place will not disappoint. The service is very good as well. I could have sworn this place was reviewed on brownstoner before. or maybe it was just a post about it opening.

If Jesus ate in Williamsburg - he would go here.

Probably my favorite place in the city right now. The food is consistently great. Lobster is great - Bass is great - Oysters are amazing.

The bartenders are also very good - cocktails may seem pricey (11 bucks) but are of a much better quality then other neighborhood cocktail joints (Hotel Delmano et all) I had probably the best sazerac cocktail in my life outside of Milk and Honey here. Really good late night bar scene as well.

Service is friendly and attentive, but in a laid back Williamsburg style. One of the few places in the nabe that is actually worth the trip up from Brownstone Brooklyn.

the addition of this place to the williamsburg dining scene is what elevates williamsburg from the rest of Brooklyn. it's terrific and the bar could be a destination in itself. great looking, classy, comfortable, and excellent food.

mr. b - if you could add sections on shopping. spas and salons, and galleries, williamsburg would win in all of those categories as well.

i plan on going to Rye next, hopefully very soon. eater says it's a notch above walter.
we shall see!

great site btw: http://blog.williamsburgeats.com/

wine lover - is rye actually officially open yet? i hear it's still in that "soft opening" phase.

DH, it seems you failed to consider the possibility that wine lover is a member of Grizzly Bear: http://nymag.com/arts/popmusic/features/56429/

Very funny, Jessibaby. Rye is open. I was there a month ago but we had to leave when we realized it was cash only and the entrees are about $24. Great decor though. (Alas, I'm not a member of Grizzly Bear.)

Agree with Dirty Hipster the drinks at Walter Foods are superb, even better than Hotel Delmano. Love the fresh lime gimlet, also the oysters and lobster. My only beef is the restaurant is most fun when you don't have to worry about the tab. There is a $13 burger, but the temptations add up fast.

I'm obviously in the minority here, and it's possible I just got unlucky, but I was not thrilled with my experience here. The oysters were very good and I enjoyed my sazerac cocktail. But everything else was a disappointment. My fish had an odd aftertaste which wasn't pleasant, and the mojito tasted like old shoelaces. Also, the place is unbelievably loud which I probably wouldn't have minded so much if the food had been better. Given the prices, I expected more and probably won't be going back anytime soon.

I'm unfortunately with TrustNoOne on this. I ate here last weekend and the service was friendly but inept, the food mediocre, and the drinks passable. All for upwards of $50 per person.

We were seated with no menus, and none were offered for about five minutes. It took about 45 minutes for the entrees to come out, and that with the restaurant less than half full. As my boyfriend's plate was heated, I suspect this was because they had initially overcooked my steak. The fries were underdone (soggy), the steak fine, if chewy. His pulled pork special was pretty good, but didn't really justify its price tag.

This is the second time I've visited, and I've experienced the same degree of quality both times. The location is convenient, but I think I'll forgo it in the future.

Agreed with most people here - I don't eat out a ton, but I've already come back to this place a few times. My experience with service has fortunately been fantastic - genuine and helpful waiters. Food is generally outstanding, with a good selection of oysters (makes me cringe when other restaurants offer "specials" of a plate of Blue Points), and always-interesting specials. Plus they have a stellar Pimm's Cup. A bit pricey, but quite understandably so given the quality. And the garden is nice.
