Koto Sushi & Steak has a string of positive reviews on ChowhoundPuppimus calls it "WONDERFUL and a fantastic deal," and pookied says it "blows the standbys like Osaka away."

Chowhound Gered says, "'Steve,' the sushi chef is friendly and very talented. He was copying the styles of some of the higher end Manhattan sushi places, making us laugh, and always serving us familiar fish in new, exciting ways. I have been a few times now, and the Achi (horse mackerel) is my absolute favorite, followed by seared yellowtail with jalapeno. I no longer order from the menu, I just let Steve keep giving me fresh pieces."

Eat It calls Koto Sushi & Steak "my go-to place for sushi in Carroll Gardens." And our own Carol Gardens says Koto is "much better than most sushi in the nabe and they could use more business." What are your thoughts on this place? And has anybody tried their steak?

Ate here the other night, and I have to agree with the rave reviews. Really excellent sushi, and the chef was very inventive. One feature of his omikase is to do slightly different preparations of the same fish, each one letting a different aspect of the fish's natural flavor come through without overpowering it. Just a great, great place and I highly recommend.

Aww, poor Koto. I'll post my one experience with the restaurant. They deliver FAST! Food is pretty good, though a bit on the pricey side if I recall correctly. On the upside, they take all credit cards, including Amex (surprisingly many restaurants esp on Henry Street are cash only). It always looks pretty empty when I walk by, so they must be doing lots of delivery business though it looks pretty nice inside. There aren't a lot of Asian restaurants in this neighborhood and out of those, less than half are any good. Koto ranks near the top for good Asian restaurants in Carroll Gardens for sure.

I live around the corner, so go there fairly often and second the concern that it looks too empty.

The sushi is superb. I consider myself knowledgeable, eating fairly often at Kuruma Zushi, Hatsuhana, Nobu, Blue Ribbon, etc. Koto is way way up there in quality... amazingly fresh and sophisticated for a neighborhood place. And they are nice.

My family has been eating at Koto since it opened, and we love Steve and his wife Jessica, who own and run it. They are very friendly and accommodating. Having eaten at many top sushi establishments in Manhattan, I can say the sushi at Koto, both in terms of quality, preparation and presentation is excellent. Steve is creative and adventurous, and he frequently presents special food and drink offerings that are well worth trying. I've noticed that business has been slow with the economic downturn, but this place deserves attention. It's better than any of the other local sushi places and a great alternative to neighboring Lucali pizza, where the wait can be too long for the appetite.

I have gotten take out from Koto a couple times now (Osaka is close enough but this is literally a couple blocks away) and I have to say, for the prices I couldn't ask for more. The rolls aren't quite as big, so if you have a healthy appetite I'd order an extra roll, but the fish is very fresh and soft, and the restaurant itself is clean and quiet, actually a nice accent to the block (although as people are fearing, it could be too quiet). The owners definitely make you feel good even if you are just waiting for the food.
