Planet Thailand - CLOSED

"You'd think this venerable Williamsburg hangout would've become passé by now, with the dozens of bars and eateries that have sprung up since it opened at its current location back in the neighborhood's dark ages (the late 90s). But people from all over the borough and beyond still flock to Planet Thailand for its quick service, arty industrial digs, and reliably tasty and frugally priced meals," writes Mark Holcomb for New York magazine.
"Most restaurants with more than 250 items on the regular menu don't do any of them particularly well. Neither do most restaurants that try tackling Thai, sushi and hibachi. But with a bite of tangy tamarind-fried squid, and a sip of steaming miso, you'll find Planet Thailand a welcome exception to both of these rules," says Citysearch.
"It’s a great place to bring a big group—or the girl you met last night at the Matt and Kim show. On the weekends things can get crowded, but there are two bars and DJs spinning, which makes the wait for a table somewhat bearable," says Metromix. What's your take on Planet Thailand?

Disco dining. Crazy but enjoyable. Totally oblivious service.

Ah yes, the reason I used to only do take-out from Joya -- the burgeoning Thai Food + DJ experience. Rot in hell, whoever started it.

What was that Thai place that was mentioned a while ago on Grand St that is supposedly top notch?

I used to look forward to eating here years ago but now the food always makes me sick. My friends still like it though. I also don't understand why they don't even try to keep the bathrooms clean or at least in working order.

I was just there on Monday night. Didi they just change owners or something? Menu was totally different and the staff not as good as the last few times I've been.
Still love the food and think its one of the best around.

Service and food leave a lot to be desired. Have they fixed the leak in the ceiling yet? I can still remember seeing the water running down the walls and the smell of dirty, wet carpet.

Food better than Sea. Location/ambiance (although chic) not so much.

Oh I remember The Thai Cafe in Greenpoint way back in 1992 or so. David(?) the owner and his wife running the place with about 3 tables. Had the best cheap food in my life at this place. I miss the spicy squid salad, and fish cakes that only showed up once a week or so. Then he moved to Bedford, and then moved to this club em I mean restaurant, and I hope he sold out, cause this place sucks.

I used to eat at Planet Thailand often when it was a ‘hole-in-the-wall’ on Bedford many years ago. I loved the food and the fact that it was a non-descript local spot with great food. Once the neighborhood started changing (sorry hipsters, you’re not my scene) and they moved to this current 'hip' location, I rarely go.
There’s better Thai food to be had in this great city of ours without the pretentiousness.

What is it about freakin cheap Thai food that makes people want to:
A) Eat it at all
B) Listen to ear splitting house music from some no name DJ
C) receive crappy service from your server who can't hear you due to B)
D) wait 1+ hours for an 8 dollar plate of pad thai and a 10 dollar mojito
Places like this (Planet Thailand, SEA, Spice, that crappy place in Union Square) really piss me off. If you wanna go to a club, go to a club - if you wanna eat thai food, go to a proper restaurant.
oh, and don't get me started on sushi restaurants.

A couple of my friends are die-hard fans of the place since the old days. Sometimes if they were around and wanted to go I would indulge them. But then they got shut down by the health dept twice in 6 months (one infraction was 'lit cigarette in kitchen area') and now I flat out refuse to go in there. It's dirty and I always get the runs. Khao Sarn on Bedford/S2 is my go-to.
