"This place is really nice. Great lighting, warm atmosphere, and the Middle Eastern tapas are delicious," writes Chowhound Theo43. Fellow 'Hound puppimus says, "The real standout of the dinner was the falafel. They were shaped like little donuts, and the amazing thing about them was how they were so magnificently fried on the outside, but moist and tender on the inside." Krista Garcia for New York magazine, who describes Mazzat as an "Egyptian-owned Mediterranean tapas bar," writes, "A solid meal can easily be crafted from the long meze list, though remarkably moist, charred lamb and chicken are reason enough to delve into the entrées."

"Our waiter was very helpful, attentive, and gave great suggestions. I loved the crispy-on-the-outside, perfectly-flavorful-on-the-inside falafel with hummus. The lentil soup was tasty, too... My friends enjoyed the seafood tagine and the burger (huge!)." writes Yelper Katey M. But fellow Yelper Risa M. notes that Mazzat isn't the busiest restaurant in town: "On week nights its pretty slow and you can watch Law and Order with the bartender if you are so inclined." How would you rate this place?

It looks like an interesting place worth checking out. By the way, I didn't realize there is a neighbourhood known as "Columbia Street Waterfront". How has it escaped having a more pretentious and catchy name, like most other New York neighbourhoods?

Mazzat? Rhymes with Asshat?

Columbia Street Waterfront = Carroll Gardens right? I haven't ever really heard this term either

It's Carroll Gardens. Problem is that for all the newbs moving to CG, when they look on craigslist et al, they don't consider anything west of Hicks "true" CG so the realtors had to coin a new phrase.

Call the neighborhood what you want, but since the BQE was put in (quite some time ago), this neighborhood - which also includes parts of Cobble Hill - has a completely distinctive feel from the rest of CG. Anyone that lives here or has been through would agree: it is its own neighborhood. And for the "old-timers" that get so caught up on neighborhood names being what they want them to be, let's not forget, before someone coined Carroll Gardens it was all South Brooklyn. Neighborhoods - and their names - evolve. Keep up.

As for Mazzat, the place is great. As others have commented, the food is all quite good. Their take on tilapia is really special, the fries are killer, and they have some spectacular wines by the glass.

Mazzat is an oasis for delicious food in a welcoming and relaxing atmosphere in one of New York's most off-the-beaten-path neighborhoods. It has survived the growing pains in this location on the dedicated backs of the owner Jimmy and his partner Robby. They are the kind of hosts that always greet and welcome you back and deliver delicious food every time without fail. They also take great pride in the wine list - the selection of summer Rose's are perfectly chilled and go so well with the cuisine. This is the kind of place you go back to over and over again, that never lets you down, and even surprises you. They do wonderful specials.
As for the name of the neighborhood, if an old stevedore in the hood calls it Red Hook, it's Red Hook. Let's get that straight once and for all - hello, all you real estate agents that thought it would sell/rent better as Carroll Gardens West or CWD - get with the program. The name Red Hook is, and will always be, awesome. Like the place!

I love this place. I've never had anything there that I didn't want more of and it's always a joy to dine there. As Boywithcat notes, the tilapia is absolutely delicious. I also love the feta cheese dip and the chicken cigars.

Mazzat is awesome. My favorite thing: sometimes they have a brussel sprout special that blows my mind. I know, brussel sprouts--but they're amazing.
