"On the corner of Nostrand and Steiner Sterling just outside of the 2/3 subway stop is Hammond’s Bakery and Jerk Center. They proudly display their massive grill in the window. Hammonds is not a sit down place (there’s no chairs or tables), and that is probably a good thing because there was a huge line when I checked it out," writes Plate of the Day.

"I always get a medium plate ($8), which I think is the best bang for your buck. They cut up the chicken for you so that it's easier to manage... They let you put as much jerk sauce on as you want so you can control the heat. It comes with rice and beans and some veggies (I think it's cabbage). If you come early enough, you can get some macaroni pie and/or plantains as well. They've usually run out of this by the time I stop in after work, though," says Yelper RedRawk r.

Hammond's won Hawthorne Street's PLG Jerk-Off — their delivery was the slowest of the local chicken joints in the competition, but the flavor was worth the wait: "Succulent with a hint of cinnamon; starts off mild with a peppery finish; good buttery meat with nice blend of spices; tender; fell off the bone; spicy." Our own babs is a fan, too. How would you rate this place?

The Jerk Store called, and they're running out of you.

It is Sterling St and Nostrand Ave not Steiner.I have eaten that jerk chicken and it is tender and tasty. The five dollar deal is enough to satisfy you.Might be $5.50 at this point.

Crownheightser -- you're right; that Plate of the Day quote was wrong, but I corrected it. The photo is new, though! I took it on Monday, and I highly recommend this place. My husband said he hasn't had jerk chicken this good since the last time he was in Jamaica.

Great jerk. And right off the train. They're not always so friendly when I order, but, well, who cares?

isn't this Crown Heights, and not PLG?

babs wrote a review on May 13, 2009 3:48 PM

This is indeed PLG (which goes as far east as the west side of NY Ave). And, yes I am a fan! Especially when it's right there when I get off the train. But even if it were a hike I'd go anyway -- it's that good!
