Brunch Spot, American

Menu

Egg.jpg
"Egg used to share its space — a narrow, high-ceilinged spot on Fifth Street — with Sparky’s All-American Food, a hot dog operation that served lunch and dinner until its owners decided to focus on their Manhattan location last June and turned the space over to Egg... Most of the dinner menu is guileless, direct and plain good eating," writes Peter Meehan for the New York Times.

Time Out New York says that Egg's breakfast menu "has no parallel in Billyburg or beyond. Tuck into a cheap meal that may include eggs Rothko (a slice of brioche with a hole in the middle that accommodates a sunny-side-up egg, all of which is covered with sharp cheddar) or a terrific country-ham biscuit sandwich." Adam Kuban for Serious Eats raves about Egg's hash browns: "OMG. When your plate comes out, you think you've been mistakenly given a crab cake or some such, but what you've really got is a hush-puppy-size dark-golden-brown hunk of creamy, buttery potatoes with a crisp outer shell—itself almost egglike in its own way."

'Point Taken shares a positive review (and recommends Egg's duck breast with dirty rice for dinner) but also mentions a few drawbacks: "The wait for brunch on the weekends can be insane and the barren white wall decor leaves something to be desired. And no credit cards." How would you rate this place?

Hate this place. You can get better friend chicken at KFC. The biscuts and gravy are bland as hell. Service is horrible too. I heard their brunch is decent, but haven't felt the need to wait an hour to be seated.

Oh, and it's cash only.

I love egg's brunch! The wait is completely insane on the weekends, and they also have a ridiculous wait system where you sign yourself up, but the maitre d' roughly goes through the list and your name can be easily missed. the eggs rothko made it worth it, but don't think i'll be going on a weekend anytime soon.

I found the food to be terribly bland. I went for brunch and I had the Eggs Rothko actually, ordered it just because I read it in a review and it was oily and tasteless. I also found the service poor, very slow not very attentive.

I hate places that define themselves on brunch - and people who feel the need to wait 2 hours for EGGS.

Seriously - come to my apt - BYOB, I'll make you all the eggs you want for 15 bucks.

Egg is my favorite restaurant in Brooklyn. Their breakfast is fantastic. The coffee is delicious (french press pots brought to the table....). I recommend the sausage and gravy, the pancakes, the fig dish, and, well, everything.

Egg is very good for immediate Williamsburg. However, I went to Five Leaves today and the breakfast there in particular is much better and it isn't too far away and a nice walk through the park to get better coffee.

i joined brownstoner just to comment on this place.. not worth the trip!

the food was super bland and the coffee was luke warm and poor quality. though we came on a quiet friday morning (many seats empty) our waiter rushed us through breakfast and it felt very unpleasant. overall disappointing experience.

I love this place. The wait sucks, but interesting hipsters, nice servers, and FANTASTIC food. The coffee is also ridiculously good for brunch coffee.
