Burrito Bar

"This TriBeCa import to a lazy stretch of Flatbush is a magnetic force on the neighborhood. It may be that their margaritas have some kind of special power that draws regulars from Park Slope, Prospect Heights, and Carroll Gardens to the hippie Zen Mexican joint," says Shecky's. And Metromix adds, "The burritos have creative names such as 'Light My Fire' and 'All Wheat Are Saying.'" Stephen Bracco for New York magazine notes, "Smoothies are named for sixties rock icons. If you think the Bob Dylan, a mix of peanut butter, bananas, and soy milk, sounds strange, don't think twice, it's all right."
Sounds a bit cheesy, but according to their website, they use "organic ingredients whenever possible" and "fresh-squeezed limes and oranges for all our margaritas and juices." Chowhound ginsbera says, "I find Burrito Bar, while tacky, actually pretty good. The food is very fresh and the pricing is very low." But fellow 'Hound Emmagram writes, "Burrito Bar is the worst! Avoid at all costs. Overpriced, under-seasoned, and unidentifiable 'Mexican' food. Chinese-owned 'Yummy Taco' on Flatbush is better." What's your take on this place?

I've been intrigued by this place since I first saw it... I guess now I'll finally have to try it. It's an excellent space (except that it's on Flatbush Ave), it's a shame that the previous burger joint City Lighting was such a disappointment.
And everyone, please ignore Hound Emmagram - no matter how bad this place is, there's no way Yummy Taco is better. (No offense, Hound, if that IS your real name.)

Above comment "Burrito Bar is the worst" about sums this place up. Perhaps it's because I loved getting a really great burger at City Lighting (the restaurant in this spot before Burrito Bar took over) but my trips here have been underwhelming at best. Why not walk a few more blocks up to 7th and visit La Taqueria, which is so much better?
I've never understood the popularity of this place, honestly. I know people like to sit outside, but what is so wonderful about eating outside on dirty Flatbush Ave?
It's a mystery.

Inviting but underwhelming. La Taqueria and that upstairs Tex Mex place, both on 7th Ave, are better.

It's certainly not the best mexican food I've ever had, nor the best margaritas. You get a lot of drink for your buck, though, so that may explain some of the draw. My wife and I have been twice. Both times service was friendly, tho the second time it was rather slow (first time, we sat at the bar). Of all the entrees we've gotten, I liked their fish tacos the best, but there are MANY restaurants in the area (including Bogota on 5th) that have better fish tacos. Ambience ... eh, it's a big Mexican restaurant. The bar's more interesting than the tables.
Overall, I don't think we'll be returning too often, but once in a while when you just want big, cheap margaritas, it's not a bad stop.

La Taqueria's fish tacos (available for takeout/delivery on Friday's only but everyday for the restuarant) are superior to all.
Yes, I've tried Bogotas (BTW, Bogota has the best skirt/hangar steak, hands down. And their quava margaritas be slammin! Small but slammin!).

The food is OK at best, and the other Mexican plaxces mentioned are superior. The bst part is sitting outside in this spot and enjoy some non-gentrified atmosphere. You'll definitely spot some local eye candy. It's no more "dirty" on this street that it is on Smith Street or Fifth Avenue or Fourth Avenue.

Not to go off topi... but... Wait... you even include "***Bid half off peak comps***" when you're writing a restsurant review?
Surely you see how thoroughly stupid that is, right?
Oh, and my take on this place. Well, it's just OK. Really not that flavorful and a bit pricey for what you get. But hey, I actually like watching the world go by on Flatbush -- sitting inside in the open windows, not on the sidewalk. That's a little too close.

It's okay. No complaints about either food or service, but no raves either. There is definitely better Mexican food to be had very close by. I find the atmosphere a little bit dark.

It's a fun place - the food is nothing to get excited about, but it's pretty standard tex mex and the drinks are reasonable. Plus I've been seated right away every single time I've been there (even at peak times), which definitely helps the appeal.

Way back in law school when this restaurant was located in Tribeca, friends and I used to go there to get drunk on the cheap. The trick is to have enough drinks and then the food tastes much better than it really is. I can't recommend this place if you are sober, but after a few glasses of liquid courage, the Tiny Tim Tacos are great!

Ok, the food is not the best I have ever had but it is good. They have a great DJ on Thursday nights and the manager (?) always remembers that I like my guac extra spicy. Why does everything always have to be super stupendous out of this work OMG excellent? Why can't a place just be good and comfortable and fun.
They are aslo very fast and reliable for delivery.

Wish I could say this place is good, but it isn't. One of the worst meals I've ever had in Brooklyn - The burrito I had was something you might expect to eat at an airport in the midwest - it had nothing to do with real Mexican food.
This place used to be called City Lighting and it was a very good restaurant and cool bar that I truly miss.

this place intrigues me. the food isnt anything special, perhaps id consider a little above average. however, this joint is ALWAYS PACKED. it doesnt matter what day of the week, its literally filled up. i dont get it, but then again -fast food joints in nyc are always filled too...

I live in the area of Burrito Bar. Whenever a friend comes to visit, or a neighbor wants to talk, we always stop in at Burrito Bar, hey the food is ok. Hankering for a good burger, some chips and guacomole, an empanada, a good mojito or pina colada, this is the joint. Its fun and you can always find a friend doing the same. Its NEIGHBORHOOD! If you are looking for the best of Mexican, then by all means, spend $75 at Dos Cominos in Manhattan. But for a good tex-mex bite, no other place like it in the neighborhood. And that is exactly what it is. A great NEIGHBORHOOD JOINT!! . How many neighborhoods can say they have a local fun joint with outdoor seating and fine dj's with afoordable food in their neghborhoods. And, by the way, the North Flatbush Avenue BID has a paid sanitation worker 7 days a week who cleans up the avenue. its NOT dirty, its beautiful and so many people use the avenue for their stroll towards Atlantic Avenue or towards the Botanic Gardens. This is MY neighborhood, and if you dont like it, stay in yours.........

when you want real mexican, or good food in general, you don't go to places that use 'funny' names for their items. it's a place for amateurs at best. this place makes me miss my hometown of L.A., and I hate L.A.
phbalanced wrote a review on May 3, 2009 12:19 PM
I ate there once, found it underwhelming, was horribly sick to my stomach the whole next day, and never went back. With La Taqueria maybe four blocks away, why would anyone go here for anything other than cheap booze?
Seconding or thirding those who preferred City Lighting (Heck, I would like to have the original City Lighting lighting store back -- the neighborhood could use one.)

The best feature of this place is that the crowd is truly mixed and truly local. Burrito Bar is a real reflection of the neighborhood and that's cool. Sure, the food's nothing special but it's fun and friendly. I watched the owner really work at making his African American clientele feel as comfortable here as the white crowd and it paid off.

This place wouldn't pass for a mexican joint in a Dutch airport. Absolutely useless food.
