Ted & Honey

"This cute and crunchy cafe from brother-and-sister team Ted and Honey (their childhood nicknames) is a welcome edition to a Cobble Hill West neighborhood lacking in go-to salad and sandwich options. After helping launch an all-green restaurant in Pittsburgh, it's no surprise that Ted puts an emphasis on sustainable and eco-friendly ingredients, like La Quercia proscuitto (featured in a signature panini with manchego, roasted peppers and mint) and Freebird all-natural chickens," says Metromix.
China Millman for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette writes, "My favorite sandwich when I stopped by for lunch was a chicken salad made from chicken that had been shredded, rather than cubed, giving it a light, airy texture. Just the right amount of house-made walnut aioli had been mixed into the chicken, along with celery and mustard. The piquant flavors were balanced by the tart, sweet accents of sliced apple and roasted beets -- a clever mix of an American dish with the classic French trio of beets, apples and walnuts."
Eating Brooklyn highly recommends Ted & Honey's lemon-blueberry scone: "Scones tend to be a little dry for my liking. But not this one; it’s perfectly crisp on the outside and surprisingly moist on the inside. The scone is slightly buttery with a hint of lemon, while the blueberries are juicy and burst with flavor. As I sat there one morning working on my laptop (they offer free wi-fi), it seemed every patron ordered the scone." How would you rate this place?

weird - i went to this place a long time ago when it very first opened and had the sandwich and the scone they're talking about. i guess i must have good instincts! anyway, those two things were great. the sandwich in particular was tasty - a little small for the price, but had the perfect balance of bread to "stuff." i'd like to go back, but it's kinda outta my way these days.

Given that this place is right across Verandah from Cobble Hill Park, wouldn't you consider this more Central Cobble Hill, rather than Cobble Hill West?
In any case, the mediocre coffee is overpriced, and they are not family friendly. Strollers have been met with practical sneers (and are nearly impossible to bring in now with the vestibule), and heaven-forbid you ask to use the loo. Still, it's good to have someplace to go for a spontaneous picnic in the park, tho I really miss the Delicatessen.

We just went here last weekend for a late afternoon lunch, and were very pleased--the food we had was really tasty and I thought reasonably priced, and it was hard to choose because so many things on the menu sounded good. The baked goods looked especially good. The service was slow (although they were busy), and definitely somewhat aloof.
I went here once awhile back, after they first opened, and didn't remember such an extensive selection, so maybe they've expanded the menu more recently?

Food was delicious - I had a chicken sausage quesadilla (I think) and a cuban sandwich and the coffee was very tasty... Very nice crowd serving and eating. It's a small space, so little wonder a can-I-use-your-bathroom-stroller-wielding mom was met with "practical sneers".

(whoops, I'm a spaz with the rating menus--meant to give 3 stars, not 2)

I agree with CHMomma that they are not very kid friendly, and the funny thing is that they have toys on their shelves. However, they do have a kick-ass egg and avocado sandwich, and their coffee, though overpriced, I think is excellent. I just barge on in with my two kids, place my order, and ignore the unpleasant woman behind the counter.

lalaland: given that "stroller-wielding moms" have to make up a decent % of this place's weekday business, they probably ought to reconsider the sneering. it's fine to have policies or practices that make it hard for moms with kids, if that's how it has to be, but there's not really much excuse for communicating about it in an uncivil way.

Mediocre food served by slacker beardos who pepper their typically disinterested incompetence with occasional moments of outright hostility when the drugs start to wear off. A real shame; the French guy's dirty deli was so much better.

Actually, it was me that needed to use the loo and I was alone at the time.
I understand that they keep the seating to a minimum to just so they are not obliged to to make its loo publicly available. Just something to keep in mind as one lingers for brunch...

I've had really mixed experiences here. The food is really good, with quality ingredients, but the service is so horrible it keeps me from going there. I don't need to be treated with kid gloves, but to be made to feel like a burden, like it's so annoying I walked in and ordered something, is not going to keep me as a customer. I posted some photos of my meals on my blog if you're curious as to what it all looks like. I too miss Delicatessen...

I don't get this place. If you didn't like dealing with people, then why did you get into retail? I've been in with kids and without but I always get the same feeling - hurry up and order and leave. And can we get a bagel or a muffin in the morning?!? They have a very convenient location for locals and park dwellers - it's a shame they don't realize that they are nothing without paying customers!

I waited a half hour for my food a few days ago. Terrible service.

This place has one of the BEST SCONES IN NEW YORK CITY. I have been to many many places in Manhattan (Alice's teacup, levain bakery, sarabeth's, even balthazer) and the outer boroughs and this place is right up there with these other places, especially the blueberry scones. Chicken salade and soups are delicious. The prices are high, but they are worth every penny. Perhaps they should thing about making the scones just alittle bigger, they are quite small compare to the scones that you get in Manhattan for the same price.

Cobble Hill West? This is the heart of Cobble Hill, right across Verandah Lane from Cobble Hill Park (or Verandah Park, as we usually call it).
I've been here a few times and usually leave feeling a little ripped off and more than a bit annoyed by the slow service and unfriendly staff. The decor is cute but they have no public bathroom to my knowledge, which is fine for me because I live around the corner, but probably sucks for people who don't.
Their sandwiches are like $8 and every time I've gotten one they've just pulled it out of the case and heated it up downstairs. I can go to Marquet and get a similar sandwich made fresh for less, and the staff there aren't particularly friendly but at least the food is pretty excellent.
Ted & Honey need to bring their prices down and lose some of the attitude. They could also do themselves a huge favor by installing a public bathroom. Maybe they're not fond of the "stroller crowd", but if that's the case they probably shouldn't have rented a space that is almost adjacent to a beautiful playground that is popular with parents and nannies alike...

I do love that Chicken Salad sandwich, but they always seem to be out of it when I get a craving for one! Yesterday, in fact, being the first really nice spring-like Saturday we've had this year, hubby and I stopped by there to grab a sandwich to eat in the park after our long walk. I was really craving the chicken salad but of course they were sold out of it. I made a mild, light-hearted fuss and mentioned that it was literally the 3rd time over the course of several months that they were out of the chicken salad and that if they keep running out of it, perhaps that's a sign they should be making more of it to begin with (it was only about 2pm, which is not exactly late for lunch on a beautiful Saturday). To their credit, one of the cashiers suggested that they "go ask Ted to make a new batch" and a few minutes later, a guy came upstairs and said they were making more chicken salad and if I didn't mind waiting I could have the sandwich I was craving. I was half-afraid they'd spit in it :) But if they DID spit in it, it didn't affect the taste because it was still quite yummy!
All that being said, I do think the prices are a bit high, but the quality of the food has been pretty consistent (and yes, I've had other things besides the chicken salad) and the service hasn't been any worse than similar establishments. I agree with everyone about them needing a public restroom... when your casual eatery is steps from the entrance to a busy park that is frequented by adults as well as kids, it would generate a lot more good will from the neighborhood. The place is pretty small, but a small bathroom could still be squeezed in there.

love this place -- and just to clear the air, there is indeed a bathroom downstairs. there is a sign pointing to it past the register.

Love this Place! Food is excellent! Yes the service can be slow when they are busy, but annoying people who can't decide what they want, often hold up the line. I think this is way better than the frech guy, otherwise known as Christoph.
