Latin American, Brunch Spot

"Painted in cheerful primary colors, perhaps as a ward against the bleakness outside—an unenviable spot under the on-ramp to the Williamsburg Bridge, and right next to a decrepit funeral home—Shachi's proves that this block has more to offer than McDonald's and fast-food tacos," writes Michael Y. Park for New York magazine.

"Although almost everything is excellent at this small, out-of-the-way Latin American restaurant in Williamsburg, it's the arepas that really steal the show," says Citysearch's Keith Wagstaff. And Youngna Park for Gothamist writes, "Though available with a variety of basic fillings: chicken, shredded beef, cheese, or ham and cheese, our favorite is the more complicated pabellon, a deceptively small-but-filling corn cake stuffed with braised and shredded beef, black beans, sweet plaintains, and cheese. Simultaneously salty, sweet, and savory, the arepa only benefits from a touch of hot sauce, available on request."

"At lunch [on weekdays], Shachis offers an arepa and a fresh juice for [$7.50], or two arepas and a juice for [$11.50]. Add in the snacking value of slender, greaseless plantain chips and piquant salsa that come free with any meal, and that’s a deal worth hopping a J train for," writes Peter Meehan for the New York Times. so ironic that you posted this. i've been saying i want to go here because recently i've read three reviews about other arepa restaurants and every reviewer says this place is better. we should all go. it's really not that out of the way. it's around the corner from the marcy jmz.
