"It isn't French, it isn't Italian, it isn't New American or Haute Barnyard: it's just a small, ecelectic, homey little place where there aren't enough restaurants to go around," writes Ciysearch's Josh Ozersky of Ortine in Prospect Heights. New York magazine lists the staffers at this family-run cafe: "Sarah Peck, a former Schiller’s and Pastis manager, oversees the herb garden, the kitchen, and the eclectic menu (everything from Belgian waffles to braised short ribs). Her husband, Steve Guidi, an acupuncturist by day, acts as the restaurant’s beverage director and thus is in charge of the kombucha and the egg creams. Steve’s mom, Barbara, is the pizza and lasagne maven."

The Brooklyn Paper's Gersh Kuntzman recommends visiting Ortine for breakfast: "We opted for the granola, a breakfast pizza (with goat cheese, eggs and pancetta), and Yossi’s Shakshuka, a baked egg dish with tomatoes, peppers and squash, and were completely satisfied." And Chowhound Sarah McC describes a dinner at Ortine with her husband: "It was delicious. He had a salad with homemade sprouts and lemony dressing. For entrees, he had the beef stew and I had a curry chicken pot pie. The portions were smallish, but it was just so fresh and homey and tasty." What's your take on this place?

this place is on my list to try, but we haven't made it over there yet. i admit to being somewhat confused by the menu. i guess i'm not very eclectic, but it isn't often i'm in the mood for both a belgian waffle and a braised short rib, and there doesn't seem to be very many selections for each of the traditional meals. that said, it looks super-cute and a great addition to the neighborhood. anyone know whether it's kid friendly?

We live nearby and so have gone often. The Pizza is fabulous, but the lasagna is our 5 year old son's favorite.

Live down the block and like its relaxing atmosphere for dinner after a hard week. The lasagna is very good, as are the pizzas. Nice to have a place like this so close.
