"It's not only the kitschy posters in Spanish, or the skateboard decks or the cramped, ramshackle decor that is reminiscent of a Mexican diner in East Los Angeles or Mexico City; no, it's the authentic Mexican street food, cooked and served lighting fast to the delight of the restaurant's many devotees," writes Keith Wagstaff for Citysearch.

Pete Wells of the New York Times raves about La Superior's tacos (priced at $2.50 each), but says that "what sets it apart is its dinner menu, with types of street food less frequently spotted in the city." Eating in Translation shares some tasty photos of La Superior's panuchos, which New York magazine describes as "a tidy composition of three corn tortillas, each split and filled with a thin slice of hard-cooked egg and a dab of refried beans, then topped with compellingly spiced bits of shredded pork, and onions pickled in orange juice."

Chowhound Juanita calls La Superior "far better than Bonita. The fish tacos are wonderful; so are the ezquites (corn in a cup); so is the nopales salad. I went to a birthday party there with a bunch of Mexicans and everybody was happy & thought it was authentic." What's your take on this place?

It's supremely delicious. They would benefit from offering a green salad. Bring your own beer or tequila to mix with the agua frescas. Go early because it fills up like crazy. If you're too late, Taco Bite at the nearby Marcy JMZ stop is also very good, especially the bbq pork burrito, and they serve liquor.

Some aficionados might complain that La Superior doesn't bring the authentic heat, but I ain't gonna complain. The torta ahogada, the pibil cochinita taco, and the taco lengua are untouchable.

But, if you have the misfortune of sitting in one of the tables near the door on a chilly weekend night, you will definitely be touched by the throng of patrons waiting for a table in the foyer. My first visit was on a Friday night and by the time we were done eating, the foyer was so full that waiting patrons kept brushing the back of my head as they shifted around to make room for the wait staff. My advice is to go during off hours when it's a little quieter and the service is better.

They have close to nothing for vegetarians, unusual at a place serving Mexican food.

They have a couple of vegetarian tacos - I love the rajas, and some vegetarian quesadillas and appetizers as well.

Actually you are right, I looked and they have changed the menu.

amazing. beware the carne asada as the grease from the meet seeps through the tortilla and it falls apart. they don't double tortilla here (my one complaint), but most other tacos don't need the extra layer. BYOB policy seems to have changed recently, so call ahead to confirm that before showing up with your own booze.

The tacos (I have tried them all) are all super tasty and authentic. They really make me want to return over and over. However, the snotty attitudes, poor service and clear lack of regard or basic kindness to customers, on the phone or in-person, infuriates me.

I always stick with the basic stuff here, too - Tacos. The salsa that comes on the side is excellent. The corn served with herbs and white cheese found in the appetizer menu was also very good.
