El Nuevo Portal

"Straight up, super delicious Dominican/Cuban/Puerto Rican lunch counter with no frills and no attitude, generally hipster-free and amazingly cheap... The best tostones (Latino french fries) in Brooklyn - piping hot, crispy on the outside and tender on the inside, just the way mami used to make them, and the bistec encebollado...esta cabrón, chico. Huge portions, fast service, and lots of the old Smith Street flavor," writes Yelper Eric S.
Chowhound HankyT recalls that Nuevo Portal had "an OK Cubano. What was REALLY great was their chuleta sandwich." And as local food photographer Michael Harlan Turkell lists the restaurants he visits most frequently for Eat Drink One Woman, he says, "I go to this place El Nuevo Portal on Smith Street in Brooklyn for my BLT's (favorite sandwich)." However, Chowhound Mr. Particular says, "Nuevo gets a B on its best day. Avoid the steak, and the plantains. " What's your take on this place?

Cheap and filling beans and rice, but El Nuevo Portal really shines for its breakfast sandwiches. Cheap, delicious, and ready super fast, it's my go-to place for a quick morning meal.

One of the last holdouts from the Smith street of yesteryear .Huge portions, the beef stew and mofungo are awesome. the Dominican place right across the street is pretty great as well.

The roast pork, the fried pork (goodness, it's good,) the fried chicken breast, all terrific. Generous portions of rice and beans go with every dish. Very friendly counter service for take-away. Next time you don't feel like cooking, you MUST try this place.

The atmosphere is nothing special, but this place is great for one reason: the food. I love, love the roast pernil (a heaping portion, perfectly succulent and served with lime). Carne guisada (beef stew) and tostones are excellent. Other menu items have yet to disappoint. I've been to many latin places like this in Manhattan, but this is one of my favorites.
