The signage read Tao Palate when we shot this photo back in September '08 (and user coho recommended it as such), but it seems to have changed its name to Dao Palate. Whatever you want to call it, it's in Prospect Heights and Chowhound yourlittleshark says, "It's vegan pan-Asian, owned by the same folks as Wild Ginger." [But our own Shoots and Leaves begs to differ -- check out the comments.]

"I ordered their Crispy Soy Protein with plum sauce, spinach wonton soup and malaysian curry stew... Absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it," writes Ye Olde Pompous Vegan. And Brooklynian J0518 adds, "It doesn't redefine vegan cooking or anything but, if you're looking for something along the lines of Zen Palate in this hood, or a more streamlined Vegetarian Palate that's meant for more than take-out, you're not going to be disappointed. It's solid, tasty stuff. They also did an amazing job with the interior."

And Supervegan's jdvjess says that even her picky, non-vegan aunt liked it: "We had samosas for appetizers and shared two main entrees and topped it off with a pumpkin cheesecake for all under $50 w/tip. She was impressed with the presentation of the food and the decor of the restaurant and I was really happy that she was able to really sample some great vegan food without feeling in the least bit uncomfortable." How would you rate this place?

This is not by the same people who do Wild Ginger. I heard they ripped off their menu and recipes, but it does taste very similar and very good. The inside is also very nice. I just wish they didn't put up that ugly sign. It looked classier before. Maybe they thought it was deterring people from coming in who thought it would be too expensive?

Nice place, good lunch prices, reasonable portions. As far as vegan cuisine goes, it's way up there in terms of taste: which is to say that, while soy protein is not a fully satisfying substitute for real meat, it doesn't taste bad either. And it's not like one needs to have real meat with every single meal. Sometimes a change of pace is nice.

It's not going to convert me from being a carnivore any time soon, but it's a solid, relatively inexpensive stop whether or not you care about eating meat. The interior's pleasant looking, and the staff has always been courteous.

I live around the corner and for whatever reason– ever since they changed their name to Dao Palate, they’ve been a lot busier. Maybe it’s the SIZE of the sign…it’s HUGE.

food is solid. price is a bit high. delivery is super quick!
